The Victorian Government consists of the Victorian Public Service (VPS) and the Victorian public sector. The VPS is made up of seven departments and a range of agencies and authorities that form the core of the Victorian Government.

The core Victorian Public Service agencies employ over 36,000 staff.
There are 33 public service agencies (or administrative offices) and 230 public sector agencies. These have been set up to manage statutory functions or operate as commercial enterprises in Victoria. Government is a key stakeholder or a source of funding for these agencies.

Some of the better-known public agencies include the Centre for Adult Education, Melbourne Ambulance Service, Country Fire Authority, Transport Accident Commission, State Library and Melbourne Museum. As you can see, there are work environments to suit many different skill sets and interests.
How are public services delivered to Victorians?
Public services are delivered to the Victorian community in many different ways. For example, four greater-Melbourne, 15 regional-urban and five rural water bodies are responsible for supplying water across the State. Other services are delivered through a single state-wide agency, such as VicRoads.
Public sector agencies are given policy direction by Ministers, with chief executives managing day-to-day operations and service delivery. Boards of management may determine policies and regulate the financial affairs of some agencies. Victorian Government agencies employ their own staff directly.
