A position is available immediately at The Buckley School, an all-boys K-8 + Academy Year day school, located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, for an exceptional After School Program Assistant Teacher who genuinely LOVES working and playing with children. Our students, boys ages 5–12, participate in an awesome, activity-based After School program held:

  • Monday - Thursday: 2:00 - 6:00 PM
  • Friday: 2:00 - 5:00 PM

This part-time role includes the Monday–Thursday hours, with the possibility of Friday as well.

  • Start Date: Immediately
  • End Date: June 9, 2026 (potential for renewal the following school year)
  • Compensation: $25-30/hour, depending on education level and experience

Position Summary

Assistant Teachers are a vital part of the Buckley After School team. Whether working directly with students or in supportive administrative/logistics roles, you’ll play an important part in ensuring that each afternoon runs smoothly.

Working closely with the Director of After School and Auxiliary Programs, Assistant Teachers help deliver a high-quality experience for students and families. Our After School program complements and enhances the academic day by offering enrichment classes in sports, STEM, arts, and more—all grounded in Buckley’s strong community standards and Code of Conduct. Experienced Assistant Teachers may have the opportunity to design and lead an enrichment class, with additional pay for this role.

In addition to supporting these classes, Assistant Teachers run our daily Drop-In program for students not enrolled in a specific class.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Provide stellar supervision, student support and behavioral management to ensure the safety and needs of the children are being met at all times
  • Plan and lead thoughtful, age-appropriate activities and facilitate free play
  • Assist students with homework as needed
  • Assist lead teachers during enrichment classes
  • Set up and clean up classrooms and shared spaces
  • Oversee snack time, take attendance, lead dismissal
  • Escort students between classrooms and our three buildings
  • Communicate behavioral, medical, and other student concerns to the Director (who will typically handle parent communications)
  • Contribute to the production of our monthly After School newsletter
  • Follow Buckley’s dress code and community expectations
  • Perform other program-related duties as assigned by the Director

Qualifications:

  • High School Degree required, College Degree or higher is preferred, as is a degree in education, child development, or a related field.
  • A passion for working with children and experience in a school, camp, daycare, babysitting, or similar setting (parenting experience counts too!) We love former or retired teachers who miss being with children!
  • A friendly, positive, can-do attitude
  • Polite, professional demeanor in all interactions with students, colleagues, and families
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Able to keep calm, adapt quickly, and think on your feet in a lively, fast-paced environment
  • Able to take direction and incorporate feedback
  • Must be dependable, organized, flexible, patient—and genuinely enjoy spending time with children!
