General FunctionThe
School Safety Supervisor- Greenwood performs advanced, professional safety, security, and loss prevention duties at Greenwood Laboratory
School, a K-12 laboratory school affiliated with Missouri State University. The position focuses on maintaining a safe and secure
environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors through independent assessment, programmatic decision-making, and leadership of
school-specific safety initiatives, including proactive measures, access control, monitoring, emergency response coordination, and
collaboration with the Office of University Safety and the Springfield Police Department (SPD) campus substation. The role emphasizes
strategic school-specific security planning, including age-appropriate threat mitigation, comprehensive visitor management programs, and
direct support for instructional and extracurricular activities. This position serves as the primary on-site safety authority for Greenwood
Laboratory School during assigned shifts and acts as lead security designee in the absence of supervisory personnel. The position is
non-commissioned and does not exercise sworn law-enforcement authority.
Description of Primary Duties1.
Maintains a safe and secure school environment by conducting regular patrols and independently determining patrol strategies, coverage
priorities, and enforcement approaches appropriate to K-12 educational settings.
2. Reduces risks by leading hazard mitigation
efforts, determining corrective actions, coordinating follow-up with Facilities Management and University Safety, and tracking resolution of
safety deficiencies affecting school operations.
3. Manages access and visitor control by overseeing daily visitor management
operations, resolving escalated access control issues, and establishing procedural adjustments during heightened threat conditions or
special events.
4. Responds to emergencies by serving as initial incident lead, applying incident command principles, directing
on-scene actions of subordinate staff, coordinating with SPD, EMS, and fire services, and making time-critical protective decisions
impacting students and staff.
5. Provides first aid/CPR and evaluates multi-victim or complex medical incidents, determining resource
needs and coordinating transition of care to emergency responders.
6. Leads and coordinates school safety drills, tabletop exercises,
and functional emergency simulations, including after-action review and recommendations for procedural improvement.
7. Serves as
Greenwood Laboratory School's primary safety liaison, collaborating with school leadership to conduct vulnerability assessments, develop
mitigation strategies, and align school safety initiatives with university-wide risk management priorities.
8. Documents incidents by
preparing comprehensive reports involving legal, safety, or administrative review and recommends policy or training modifications based on
trend analysis.
9. Assists with event security and traffic direction and serves as lead safety coordinator for school-sponsored
events involving elevated risk or external attendance.
10. Provides functional supervision and work direction to the Building Safety
Specialist, including assigning daily work, on-the-job training and monitoring performance.
11. Contributes to organizational success
by exercising professional judgment, leadership, and accountability consistent with a protective services role.
Minimum
Acceptable Qualifications Education: Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, emergency management, or
closely related field is preferred.An equivalent combination of years of experience and education may be considered for substitution of
educational requirements.
Experience: A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in school
security, campus safety, law enforcement support roles, military police, emergency management, or protective services is required.
Experience must include documented independent decision-making authority, emergency leadership responsibility, and coordination with
external public safety agencies. Experience providing training, or functional supervision of other personnel is
preferred.
Skills: High level verbal and written communication skills are required, including the ability to brief
administrators, prepare formal incident analyses, and present safety concepts to varied audiences. Demonstrated ability to independently
assess threats, prioritize competing safety needs, and implement corrective action with minimal supervision is required. Ability to
interpret and apply laws, regulations, and campus safety policies to complex, non-routine situations is
required.
Certification and Training: A valid Missouri driver's license is required. Current certification in First
Aid, Adult/Child/Infant CPR, and AED is required throughout employment. Successful completion of Incident Command System (ICS) 100 and
National Incident Management System (NIMS) 700 is required or must be completed within one year of appointment. Ongoing training may include
emergency response, de-escalation, Clery Act awareness, and other training relevant to campus and school safety as assigned. All newly hired
School Safety Specialists will complete a University Safety orientation and school-specific training prior to independent
assignment.
