Position Overview

Responsible for analyzing employer submissions for accuracy, researching and correcting errors, and ensuring compliance with coding and reporting standards. Uses mathematical reasoning, statistics, and problem-solving skills to evaluate response goals, identify discrepancies, and maintain high-quality work and customer service standards. Performs quality checks, learns new systems and coding updates, and makes sound decisions based on relevant information. Travel for conferences, training, and business needs is required.

Position Details

  • Hours of Work: Monday - Friday 8:00am-4:30pm. This is an in-office position.

  • You will report at 1000 E Grand Ave., Des Moines IA .

  • Hybrid telework and alternate work schedule opportunity available after completion of an initial 6-month probationary period of in-office employment.

About Iowa Workforce Development

Iowa Workforce Development (IWD) is a state agency dedicated to providing exceptional employment services and connecting employers with skilled workers. With a strong focus on continuous improvement and aligning services with workforce demands, IWD offers comprehensive support to job seekers and employers through a statewide network of IowaWORKSCenters.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collect, code, compile, evaluate, and report occupational injury and illness data for the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses (SOII).

  • Review and validate 8,000 annual survey submissions for accuracy and compliance with established BLS methodologies and reporting standards.

  • Code detailed injury and illness case data, including nature of injury, body part affected, source/cause, event circumstances, industry, and occupation classifications.

  • Analyze employer-submitted narratives and applied standardized demographic and occupational coding procedures.

  • Verify employer and establishment data using QCEW records and external databases including Iowa Secretary of State, Reference USA, Better Business Bureau, and USPS.

  • Maintain and update databases by identifying duplicate, out-of-scope, or closed establishments and ensuring data integrity.

  • Respond to employer inquiries and resolved complex survey reporting questions through phone, mail, fax, and online communication channels.

  • Collaborate with survey management and BLS regional office staff to monitor production benchmarks, timelines, and submission requirements for timely survey completion.

Communicate regularly with the national and regional offices to ensure accurate tracking of strategic performance goal measures and attend and represent management at federal-state meetings, participates in discussions on strategic planning goals and outcomes, and provide information as needed.

Attend all required training related to SOII programs offered by national or regional offices. Opportunity to attend optional trainings as needed and determined by Bureau Chief.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in statistics, mathematics, economics, political science, or public administration and experience equal to two years of full-time work in statistical analysis or economic research.

  • A total of six years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where one year of full-time experience equals 30 semester hours of education (maximum substitution of four years).

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master's degree in statistics, mathematics, epidemiology, economics, public policy, public affairs, public administration, or business analytics.

  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes 18 months of fulltime work as a Statistical Research Analyst 1.
