STV Player is the UK’s fastest-growing broadcaster streaming service, giving viewers in Scotland the opportunity to watch their favourite STV shows, live or on demand. STV Player’s content library has grown to over 150 boxsets, including US thriller The Bridge, Irish legal drama Striking Out and Australian eight-parter The Slap. Viewers can upgrade to STV Player+, a subscription service which offers the opportunity to watch Player content advert-free, download shows for offline viewing, and also watch them abroad.
About the role
We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Junior Data Scientist to support the management of STV’s rapidly growing customer database and shape the next stage of the STV’s data strategy. This position will be responsible for the interrogation of STV’s digital product performance with an obsession to drive improvements. They will provide insight into our online user behaviour and use this to deliver targeted content, marketing campaigns and advertising in order to enhance customer experience.
The role will interface with various Digital stakeholders including Product, Ad Operations and Marketing. Working collaboratively with teams across the business, the Junior Data Scientist will help identify opportunities to further grow our consumer database, improve the customer experience, increase product loyalty and ultimately drive revenue via data for our Digital products.
Skilled in Data Analysis within a large organisation, working with complex and diverse data sources
Use data analysis techniques to better deliver customer insight, fully utilising new and existing analytical tools and techniques to inform business decisions
Ability to gather appropriate data requirements from a diverse range of third party datasets - including identifying existing data gaps
Identify the best ways to match datasets together to maximise their value, delivering valuable customer and operational insights, applying and innovative approaches where required
Efficiently query large datasets to provide customer insight that can be used to solve complex business problems, improve customer experience etc
Work alongside STV stakeholders to understand the key business problems and implement advanced data and analytical techniques to solve those problems
Work with analytical projects - develop hypotheses to explore and avenues of opportunity
Frequent collaboration with multi-skilled Digital Insights team members to share impart knowledge and learn about other areas e.g. Engineering, Business Intelligence
Qualifications and Skills:
Degree qualified or equivalent in a Business related discipline
Demonstrable experience of working with large customer databases and processing large amounts of data
Strong analytical skills with the ability to analyse and summarise a range of complex data issues quickly and accurately
Understanding of Data Mining techniques and how to apply them to large data sets
Ability to code using programme languages; such as SQL, R or Python
A good working understanding of databases – relational and non relational
Passion for understanding consumer behaviour and translating this into commercial opportunities
Experience delivering business transformation through data driven analysis
Ability to think creatively to identify and deliver new, innovative analysis projects from existing and new data sources
Comfortable interpreting and communicating complex analytical concepts to senior and operational staff both technical and non-technical
Proven track record of having established successful business relationships with stakeholders and evidence of influencing and responding to senior stakeholders with credibility
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work collaboratively and develop effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders
Good understanding of the Data Protection Act and knowledge of the forthcoming GDPR legislation
Excellent planning and organisational skills
Experience with cloud platforms (Databricks and AWS)
Familiarity with data transformation
Working knowledge of visualisation tool e.g. Tableau, Qlik, PowerBI
