JOB REQUIREMENTS: Operate computer-controlled machines to perform one or more machine functions on metal or plastic work pieces. On the job training for operating various CNC vertical and horizontal machining centers, lathes, saws and other various equipment used in manufacturing. Level one machine operators generally perform repetitive tasks that are learned quickly on the job. Trainees begin by observing experienced workers. They assist by supplying materials, starting and stopping the machine, or removing finished products from it. As they learn new operators\' skills, they become responsible for their own machines. Most operators learn the basic machine operations and functions in a few weeks and may need a year or more to learn the more difficult skills. Machine operators need no special education, but GMI requires people with a high school diploma and basic computer skills.
