About the Role
Lake Erie Council seeks a hands-on Director of Finance to be responsible for all accounting and finance functions for a $4M operating nonprofit with approximately $11M in endowment/investments serving youth across Northeast Ohio. This leader manages and performs accounting operations, budgeting and forecasting, cash management, financial reporting, investments, and internal controls; partners closely with the Scout Executive and Board Treasurer; and supports Finance-related Board committees.
The Director will also play a key financial leadership role in supporting the Council’s forthcoming comprehensive campaign, ensuring proper accounting, reporting, investment, and stewardship of multi-year pledges and restricted funds.
The role supervises one experienced accountant/bookkeeper.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the close and reporting cycle: general ledger, monthly close, financial statements, dashboards, and variance analyses in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting.
- Lead planning & performance: annual budget, reforecasts, projections, and multi-year financial modeling.
- Manage liquidity & investments: cash flow, reserves, and endowment/portfolio oversight in partnership with the Investment/Finance Committees.
- Audit & compliance: coordinate the annual external audit and Form 990; maintain robust internal controls and segregation of duties.
- Assets & capital: support fixed-asset accounting, depreciation, capital budgeting, and property/camp project tracking.
- Vendor & contracts: oversee procure-to-pay, vendor management, and key business contracts.
- Leadership & service: advise the Scout Executive and Board committees on financial results and projections; present clearly to non-financial audiences.
- Team management: supervise and develop one accounting staff member; drive process improvement and documentation.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s in accounting required (CPA preferred). Degrees in Finance/Business may be considered with strong accounting depth.
- 7–10 years progressive accounting/finance experience in a nonprofit or complex mission-driven organization.
- Mastery of GAAP, fund accounting, audit coordination, budgeting, and financial reporting; experience with endowments/investments.
- Proven record improving controls, closing accuracy/speed, and reporting clarity.
- Excellent communication skills, sound judgment, and collaborative leadership style.
Preferred: Experience with QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, or similar; Grants/fund-restricted accounting; Payroll/HRIS coordination; Project/capital tracking.
