Retail Order Processor

Smith & Truslow is an online-only spice distributor with 2-4 staff members outside of the holiday season. We are seeking a part-time employee with food safety experience to manage our retail store ( www.smithandtruslow.com ). This position starts between $20 & $25/hour depending upon SQF experience. This position requires you to devote 32-40 hours of work a week.

This position requires a 2-round interview.
1st round candidates will receive a phone interview, while 2nd round candidates will be invited for an on-site interview. The on-site interview will include lifting 30-55 lbs over your head.

Basic requirements for Retail Order Processor only:
  • Must be able to devote 10-15 hours/week to training: typically this takes 4 weeks but can be completed in less time for employees who demonstrate competence more quickly. Training hours are anytime from 9 AM to 7 PM Monday-Sunday, you will work w/ your supervisor to schedule your 32 hours a week for training. Once trained you will set your schedule, S&T will not set your schedule, & you will be able to work shifts earlier or later than the aforementioned hours if you wish.
  • Can lift up to 55 lbs. two to ten times daily & carry for a distance of 6 to 12 feet. Can also perform regular cleaning such as sweeping, mopping, wiping down equipment, taking out trash, & dishes. This employee will be tasked w/ filling out cleaning & maintenance logs for supervisor review.
  • Makes retail SKUs of salts, spices, herbs, & spice blends: this consists of washing small & medium glass jars, filling jars or refill baggies, printing & affixing the top & side labels.
  • Fills, seals, labels, packs, & ships online retail orders 5x/week. Online retail orders must be finished by 10 AM Monday through Friday.
  • Assists in the production of smaller quantities for private label & corporate order customers as they come in; i.e. washing, bottling, packaging, sealing, & labeling 100s or 1,000s of jars or packets. (Note: this kind of work is completed by a team & is not the sole responsibility of any employee).
  • Works quietly except when in need of assistance, in which case, asks for help immediately. Employees often work solo & are encouraged to listen to headphones so that they do not interrupt others' work.
  • Is willing to take notes throughout tenure at Smith & Truslow, & is able to consistently pay attention to detail during all hours of shift; i.e. has excellent working memory skills.
  • Can staff the warehouse until all orders are picked up by USPS, or else has transportation of their own & can deliver orders to USPS & FedEx & UPS should the employee need to leave before pickup.

Preferred but not required:
  • Familiarity w/ SKU management such as lot numbering & First-In-First-Out (FIFO) practices.
  • Desire & willingness, as well as the skill set to earn new certifications and seek out new customers for the business.
  • Ability to drive a stand-up forklift.
  • Can read & fill a recipe, but can also read & fill a sales order, & is able to differentiate recipes from sales orders after 2-4 examples.
  • Fulfills restaurant orders & makes spice blends for distribution when the Commercial Order Processor is absent.
  • Fulfills pallet orders starting from original email request, including receiving ingredients, to properly executing a Bill of Lading & loading pallets onto the truck when the Warehouse Manager is absent.
  • Creative problem-solving & creative approaches to finding what needs to be done in the warehouse are encouraged. There is always more work, but candidates who prefer to be delegated to will not perform as well as self-starters.
