Under general supervision of the park director and Park Ranger Captain, the incumbent is responsible for guarding municipal park property against vandalism, theft and fire and for preserving public order both during normal park usage and special events. The Park Ranger carries out this responsibility by patrolling park grounds, either on foot or by motor vehicle. Reports of vandalism, theft or violations are made to the supervising authority. This is a highly visible, unarmed, position which assists the general public in the use of park facilities by encouraging responsible behavior and by encouraging compliance with established rules and regulations. Dependent upon the jurisdiction, this may be a uniformed position under the direction of either the Police Department or the Recreation Department. Supervision is not normally a responsibility of the position.
This can be a full-time or part-time seasonal position that commences in April and winds down by the first week of December. Hours are flexible but can include weekends, evenings and holidays.
General description;
Provides a safe welcoming and helpful environment for park patrons
1. Patrols park and beach area to enforce park regulations (E. G. Violations of alcohol policy, glass beverage container, smoking restrictions and unleashed dog rules)
2. Provides security and safety assistance to Park visitors, and staff as needed
3. Uses visibility and presence to deter violations of Park rules and deter mischief
4. Participates in emergency incident drills with lifeguards, police, and EMS resources
5. responds to emergencies and provides assistance to lifeguards, and police and EMS responders
6. Assists with internal security
7. Carries out related duties as needed
8. Works varied hours/shift
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Good knowledge of assigned grounds, buildings and parking areas; good knowledge of park functions, operations, regulations, policies and procedures; working knowledge of first aid procedures; working knowledge of crowd control methods; ability to direct traffic and control parking; ability to act quickly and calmly in emergencies; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to get along well with others; ability to operate a motor vehicle; tact and courtesy; initiative and resourcefulness; integrity; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Work experience and skill requirements
1. Prior work as a NYS licensed security guard, public safety responder(E. G police officer, firefighter, EMS provider) preferred
2. Ability to respond to emergency situations, administer first aid, operate all-terrain vehicle
3. Physical fitness, commensurate with duties
4. Valid NYS driver’s license
5. Valid NYS Security Guard’s license
Education requirements
1. Graduation from an accredited high school or successful completion of GED requirements
2. CPR/AED certification from Red Cross or American Heart Association, or successful completion of NYS EMT requirements
3. Law enforcement or security training preferred
Education and skills requirements
1. Graduation from an accredited high school, or successful completion of NYS GED requirements;
2. NYS security guard license;
3. CPR/AED certification from Red Cross, or American Heart Association, or NYS EMT certification;
4. Strong interpersonal skills, ability to supervise and coordinate the work of park rangers, ability to interact with park patrons;
5. Ability to react to emergency incidents;
6. Ability to direct others in a calm and professional manner in emergency situations
