Clinical Care/Specialized Services Supervisor (MLS Supervisor) Microbiology

Job Description

The Department of Pathology is seeking a Clinical Care Services Supervisor (Medical Lab Scientist Supervisor) to verify, monitor and oversee molecular infectious disease, viral and/or bacteriologic in vitro testing to provide data for use in the treatment and diagnosis of disease and supervises the operational activities of a small self-contained laboratory or a unit within a larger laboratory. This includes preparing patient specimens for mail out testing. Verify, monitor and oversee specified routine and STAT tests which may involve numerous steps and techniques that require the use of judgment and problem solving skills. Ensures the smooth, efficient operation of a clinical laboratory. Monitors for accurate performance of approved procedures while troubleshooting and ensuring training and instruction. It is the responsibility of the lead scientist to continuously interact and consult with Director of Microbiology, Sectional Leadership, Quality Engineer, Lab Manager and Sectional Directors. This position is 100% time, 0800-1630, Monday - Friday.

Duties To Include

  • Functions as the continuity/reference point in the knowledge of the specific tasks, processes, and procedures in the given unit.
  • Interviews, trains, evaluates, and provides oversite of the performance of personnel.
  • Maintains communication with other hospital personnel.
  • Maintains personal development.
  • Monitors proficiency and competency tests.
  • Oversees the validation of new tests and testing platforms.

Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology program from an accredited college/university with specialized training in laboratory medicine, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • 1 – 3 years clinical laboratory experience within the past five (5) years is required.
  • Certification as Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or specialist certification in appropriate laboratory discipline from American Society for Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) from Health Education and Welfare (HEW) is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and skills shown by successfully leading teams/groups in projects, work assignments, policy updates, etc. is required.


Desirable Qualifications

  • Demonstrated proficiency in communication and working well with others is desired.
  • Extensive clinical microbiology experience is desired.
  • Supervisory experience within a clinical microbiology laboratory is desired.
  • Experience working in an academic medical center is desired.
  • Demonstrated technical writing experience (particularly for NCCLS and CAP-compliant documents) is desired.
