Work Schedule: Temporary work involving 5-40 hr/wk Monday -Friday depending on weather or water conditions, and field work needs, e.g., preparing equipment for field work, conducting field work, storing field equipment.

Work Location: _ St. Paul - UMTC, Hodson Hall and field work

Job Duties

• 75% Field work: The primary job duties revolve around field work to conduct mussel surveys in the Namekagon River
• 5% Lab work: Some laboratory work will be needed to prepare field equipment
• 20% Data Entry: Field-collected data will need to be entered into a spreadsheet or GIS database

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

• Undergraduate degree in biology or related field
• 1 year of experience working in natural resources or a biology-related profession
• SCUBA certified
• Willing to work in a cool river with a wetsuit
• Valid driver's license
• Familiar with handling a truck or van
• Familiar with common Wisconsin mussel species
• Familiar with data entry into spreadsheets (e.g., M/S Excel, Google Sheets)
• Familiar with GIS data entry and map generation.

Preferred Qualifications

• SCUBA diving in currents, e.g., streams or rivers
• Experience collecting mussels from natural conditions
• Previous experience handling and identifying mussels in the field
• Familiar with all Wisconsin mussel species
• Experience analyzing natural resource data sets and summarizing results in reports or publications
• Experience managing field work projects, working with the public to describe natural resource projects

About the Department

The Department of Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology (FWCB) comprises a multidisciplinary group of scholars working on applied and fundamental problems related to the ecology of free-ranging wild animals, management of harvested and invasive species, and documentation and conservation of biodiversity. Our mission is to inspire and create solutions for biological conservation and management in a diverse and changing world.

My laboratory conducts research in the field and laboratory to improve native mussel and fish conservation, and habitat analysis and management.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $15.25 - $23.00 per hour, depending on education/qualifications/experience.
