Description
Would you like to have a position that is team oriented and full of opportunity for career development? If so, look no further than working as Correctional Postal Technician I at the Green River Correctional Complex. This position is a good stepping-stone for career advancement, within the Department of Corrections. You will be supervising all incoming and outgoing mail from the institution ensuring the safety and security of the facility. You will assist the Internal Affairs department with investigations by collecting information from institutional mail. Postal Technicians ensure that mail enters and leaves the facility according to policy and search all mail for any contraband.
The candidate needs to possess strong communication skills, have good time management, strong attention to detail, and leadership abilities. You need to have the ability to work under pressure and be able to establish teamwork for the smooth and safe operation of the facility.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Be knowledgeable of Corrections Policy and Procedures pertaining to mail and property.
- Sort and distribute all incoming and outgoing mail as directed by Policy and Procedures.
- Assist staff and inmates on proper mailing and shipping procedures.
- Inspect all incoming and outgoing mail for contraband and deliver to appropriate mailboxes or living areas.
- Distribute staff mail to appropriate personnel.
- Be knowledgeable of postal rates, shipping guidelines, etc.
- Document arrival and departure of all packages.
- Conduct accurate mail inspections and make appropriate decisions regarding contraband or unauthorized items.
- Package or dispose of all rejected items or documents, make appropriate notifications and place in proper area.
- Carry out work goals and objectives set forth by supervisor.
- Organize work duties and show courtesy, respect and concern to fellow staff and inmates.
- Willing to work as a team.
- Assist the Internal Affairs department with investigations by collecting information from institutional mail.
- Develops and maintains work standards.
- Develops procedures to solve problems in a timely manner.
- Accepts change and is willing to initiate positive change.
- Conduct themselves in a professional manner.
- Communicate with Security and Program staff.

Working Conditions
Incumbents working in this job title requires daily travel to pick up and deliver mail.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
