Parks and Recreation Seasonal Groundskeeper

OVERVIEW:
The Town of Bar Harbor is now hiring for a seasonal non-exempt Parks and Recreation Groundskeeper. The part-time position offers hours between the months of May-October. The Town of Bar Harbor is the gateway to Acadia National Park, one of the top ten most visited National Parks in the U.S. The Town welcomes millions of visitors every season, requiring routine upkeep of our town parks, recreational facilities, cemeteries, garden features throughout town, cemeteries, and comfort stations (restrooms).

RESPONSIBLE TO:
The Parks and Recreation Seasonal Groundskeeper will be responsible to the Highway Superintendent.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
This position does not oversee any employees; however, this position is responsible to oversee the work of town contractors hired to perform related contracted services such as mowing, tree treatments, gardening, and cleaning.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain the Town’s parks, playgrounds, cemeteries, ballfields and courts, and comfort stations, including but not limited to weed whacking, mowing, trimming, gardening, picking up trash, tree limbs, and other debris, and leaf blowing where contracted services are not yet in effect or have not been retained.
  • For contract services to be retained, the Town intends to hire mowing, landscaping, and cleaning services; however, those services do not cover all the areas required to be maintained and this position will need to maintain the areas not covered by contractors.
  • Identifying repairs needed, such as washouts, park equipment in poor condition, trees down at cemeteries, bathroom faucets malfunctioning, etc. and reporting those repairs to Highway Superintendent or designee.
  • Reviewing contractor invoices for work performed in compliance with contract and quality of the work performed.
  • Performing light maintenance on equipment as needed.
  • Ensure the ball fields are line striped before scheduled games.
  • Support the grooming of the ball fields.
  • Help with any set up or breakdown of approved special events occurring on Town property.
  • Provide oversite of the comfort stations, report any safety hazards or maintenance to the Highway Superintendent or designee.
  • Provide courteous service when interacting with the public.
  • Report all issues encountered to Highway Superintendent or designee.
  • Light maintenance on Town Playgrounds, such as raking new wood chips, repairing gates or fences, etc.

PERIPHERAL DUTIES

  • Other duties as directed by the Highway Superintendent or designee.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Able to operate landscaping equipment.
  • Knowledge of OSHA standards and safe operating procedures.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to provide feedback to the town contractors on the quality of work performed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • At least one (1) year of prior park maintenance or landscaping experience required.
  • Knowledge of basic horticulture and plant care practices preferred.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

  • Phone.
  • Truck, provided by the Town.
  • Leaf blowers, lawn mowers, trimmers, weed whackers.
  • Shovels, rakes, and other hand tools as needed.
  • Computer software such as, but not limited to, MS Word, MS Excel, Adobe, and Internet Browser.
  • Copier and Scanner.

  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds, specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

  • The noise level while operating landscape equipment may be high. Proper PPE will be provided and expected to be worn while operating equipment or around others operating equipment.
  • Must be able to work in varying weather conditions, including rain and wind. Rain gear and PPE will be provided.

Starting salary is $29.37 an hour.
