Description
Are you interested in joining our team of dedicated law enforcement professionals? Do you want to be a part of a law enforcement agency that works every day to protect Kentucky's fishing, hunting, boating, recreational shooting, wildlife watching, and related outdoor activities?

Kentucky Game Warden Recruits are initially assigned to Taylor County during their training period and, upon completion, will be transferred to their permanent county assignment location. At the conclusion of the Game Warden Recruit training period, recruits may be assigned to one of the following counties: Allen, Barren, Bourbon, Breckinridge, Carter, Greenup, Henderson, Jefferson, Logan, Meade, Monroe, and Morgan.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Attend department and Department of Criminal Justice Training instruction on patrol tactics, vehicle and vessel operation, state statutes and administrative regulations enforcement, firearms training and additional information concerning hunting, fishing, and boating law enforcement policies.
  • Attend all instruction concerning federal and state fish, wildlife and boating enforcement policies and procedures. In addition, receive information and training on the best practices in fish and wildlife management.
  • Receive instruction on the accepted practices when conducting investigations, collecting evidence, and presenting court testimony. Become knowledgeable of the state statutes and regulations in order to assist other federal, state and local law enforcement agencies in enforcement activities. Provides information to citizen inquiries.
  • Assist staff with camper transport, hunter and fishing training, fishing events and boater safety events.
  • Deliver licenses and information as directed.
  • Monitor the licensing of fish, wildlife and boating activities.
  • Attend organization meetings.
  • Assist other divisions on projects as directed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional Requirements:
  • Have not have been convicted of any felony; a misdemeanor under KRS 510.120, 510.130 or 510.140; a second or subsequent offense under KRS 510.148; or a criminal attempt, conspiracy, facilitation, or solicitation to commit any degree of rape, sodomy, sexual abuse, or sexual misconduct; or have had any offense listed under the subsection expunged.
  • Cannot be prohibited by federal or state law from possessing a firearm.
  • Have not received a dishonorable discharge, bad conduct discharge, or general discharge under other than honorable conditions, if having served in any branch of the Armed Forces of the United States.
  • Cannot have had certification as a peace officer permanently revoked in Kentucky or another state.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be 21 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license to qualify for employment in this job classification. Employees in this job title are subject to the provisions of Kentucky Revised Statute (KRS) Chapter 15 and Kentucky Administrative Regulation (KAR) 503 KAR 1:140 relating to peace officer certification as administered by the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council. The employee must successfully complete the DOCJT Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy within twelve months of employment in this job classification. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.
Working Conditions
Conditions are consistent with other law enforcement officers. Incumbents working in this job title spend the majority of time working outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
