JOB SUMMARY:


Prepare samples of DNA-protein complexes by using standard molecular biology techniques to make DNA molecules. Depositing molecules on substrates for imaging. Use the atomic force microscope (AFM) to acquire images of such complexes. Use the AFM to characterize the interaction of the adhesin protein with various anodized surfaces. Keep detailed and rigorous lab notes. Use programs to analyze data. Participate in weekly group meetings where will regularly present progress. Other duties as assigned.

JOB DUTIES:


70% - Essential - Image samples by depositing DNA samples on a surface substrate appropriate for atomic force microscopy or spectroscopy (AFM/S), sitting at the microscope, adjusting a few parameters according to standard procedures and watching the scanned images forming on the monitor to assess their quality. Examine quality of images and re-test if necessary. Store images for analysis.

15% - Essential - Prepare samples using standard molecular biology techniques to make DNA molecules. Depositing molecules on substrates for imaging following available and tested protocols.

15% - Essential - Analyze and discuss results using programs provided by supervisor. Discussing, review and troubleshooting results regularly with supervisor and at group meetings.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:


Education - High School and work experience in a related health care setting or in a clinical or research laboratory setting; or 12 semester hours of academic training in biology and/or chemistry; or registration as a Certified Laboratory Assistant by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or an equivalent registry; or successful completion of a formal program of instruction for laboratory assistants at a hospital or academic institution.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:


Education - Bachelor's Degree - in Physics and Biophysics

Work Experience 1+ years AFM imaging of DNA both circular and linear, imaging, force spectroscopy using adhesion to characterize anodized surfaces.

COMPENSATION INFORMATION


Anticipated Salary Range: $14.75 - $16.00/hour


Salary is dependent upon several factors including, but not limited to, a candidate's previous experience, knowledge, skills and performance in accordance with Clemson's compensation guidelines.

Normal Operations

Required to follow emergency facility closure directives, and not normally expected work on-site during emergency situations.
