Design & Build Facilitator (STEAM Focus)

Job Description

Position summary

We are looking for a Design & Build Instructor with a diverse background and a passion for hands-on mentorship. This role is ideal for an individual who enjoys working with youth and possesses experience or a strong interest in building, design, or technology.

As an Instructor, you will lead engaging, project-based sessions where students actively create, problem-solve, and collaborate. While prior expertise is valued, no formal teaching license is required. We provide comprehensive on-the-job training, covering everything from safety and tool use to curriculum support.

Building Futures provides hands-on design and build workshops that help students develop real-world skills through creativity and problem-solving. Founded by architects, our curriculum blends design, construction, and STEAM concepts so students don’t just learn—they build, experiment, and think critically.

Our programs serve youth ages 8–18 through in-school programming, Saturday workshops, evening programs, and summer camps. We believe in non-traditional, engaging learning experiences that give students the tools to build their future.

Key responsibilities

Instruction & Mentorship

  • Facilitate project-based STEAM lessons (ages 8–18) in woodworking, robotics, and design by guiding students through the design, building, and problem-solving process.
  • Adapt teaching styles to meet individual student needs and skill levels.
  • Engage and challenge students through positive mentorship to inspire curiosity and a passion for STEAM.

Safety & Operations

  • Maintain classroom management by keeping students on task and ensuring a focused, safe learning environment
  • Track student progress and complete basic administrative records.
  • Support light workshop cleanup during and between sessions

Collaboration & Growth

  • Attend on-the-job training to master new tools and curriculum.
  • Partner with teammates to improve programming and the student experience.
  • Refine teaching skills through peer feedback and self-reflection.
  • Support flexible scheduling including school days, evenings, and weekends.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the program and organization's mission.

Qualifications

  • Interest in working with youth and creating positive learning experiences
  • Experience or familiarity with at least one of the following:
  • Trades (woodworking, construction, etc.)
  • Art/design (drawing, architecture, creative projects)
  • Technology (coding, robotics, electronics)
  • Education or youth development
  • Willingness to learn and teach hands-on skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Reliable, adaptable, and team-oriented
  • Must be able to pass a comprehensive criminal background check and child abuse/neglect screening as a condition of employment

Preferred but not required:

  • Prior teaching, coaching, or youth program experience
  • Ability to manage groups of students in an active environment
  • Experience with tools, maker spaces, or project-based learning environments

Working Conditions

  • Part-time, in-person role
  • Programs take place in schools, workshop settings, and community spaces
  • This position supports a flexible, youth centered schedule that includes weekday school hours, Saturday workshops, occasional evening programs such as robotics and small group learning, and seasonal summer camp experiences.
  • Active role requiring standing, moving, and hands-on engagement
  • Use of tools and equipment (training provided; safety is a priority)

Salary Range / Benefits

  • $20.00 – $24.00 per hour (based on experience)
