POSITION: Temporary Water Operator-In-Training (Up to 5 months)
SALARY: $31.89/Hourly

The City of Unalaska is accepting applications for the Temporary Water Operator-in-Training position. Located in the number one commercial fishing port in the United States, the International Port of Dutch Harbor, Unalaska, Alaska, is a coastal community in the Eastern Aleutian Islands with a multi-cultural population of approximately 4,250 full-time residents and seasonal influxes from multiple commercial fishery operations.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This is an entry-level position. Under the supervision of the Water Supervisor, the employee performs a variety of unskilled work in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of City water production, treatment, and distribution systems.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Participates in the installation, maintenance, operation, and repair of water production, treatment, and distribution systems.

  • Assists with inspecting, preventative maintenance, servicing, and adjusting equipment to ensure effective operation of motors, pumps, blowers, chemical systems, and other equipment used in the various water plants.

  • Assists in the operation of valves, gates, and all other process equipment to control flow and treatment processes. May start/stop pumps and generators as required.

  • Assists with maintaining records, diagnosing equipment and operations malfunctions, requisitioning supplies, and reporting malfunctions to obtain corrective action. This may include data entry associated with Cartegraph and other computer-related items.

  • Ability and willingness to comply with all City policies and regulations outlined by OSHA regulations and City of Unalaska safety standards.

  • Maintain good communication with the public and co-workers.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Three months or more of experience relating to the operation, construction, repair, and/or maintenance of water treatment and distribution systems, including the operation of related maintenance equipment preferred.

  • Knowledge of machinery and equipment, as well as the occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work, is preferred.

  • Working knowledge of computers in a Windows environment.

  • Other equivalent combinations of experience and education that could substitute for the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities will be evaluated on an individual basis.

LICENSES & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age. High school diploma or GED.

  • Valid Driver's License (Alaska preferred).

  • Ability to pass all required pre-employment testing, i.e., Criminal background and History and Drug Testing.

  • Must be eligible to work in the US; requirements by Federal Law, if hired, must complete an employment eligibility verification form (I-9).

  • Ability to work outside in inclement weather.
