Position Summary & Responsibilities:
Position Summary:
This Engineering Technician Specialist position is located in Topeka, KS. The main purpose of this position is to assist the State ITS Engineer with coordination of processes and procedures to manage statewide maintenance of ITS devices, review of ITS construction plans, coordination of construction inspection for new ITS devices, and inspection of preventive maintenance for ITS devices.
NOTE: The employee in this position must also maintain Certified Inspection certifications under the KDOT CIT Program as outlined in the Engineering Technician Progression Manual for the specific job path and any additional as outlined by the Senior Manager.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
- Assists state ITS Engineer with management of ITS device maintenance for signs, cameras, speed detectors, and other devices. This includes regular coordination with the Wichway Traffic Management Center to monitor ITS device status and function, troubleshooting, documenting device operation and communication issues and interacting with internal and contract staff to recommend ways to solve problems.
- Coordinate with the ITS device maintenance contractor. Review the excel spreadsheet kept by the maintenance contractor for accuracy and propose any needed changes so that a searchable history of devices, device repairs, replacements, and warrantees is maintained.
- Maintain a working knowledge of ATMS software used to control ITS devices to better understand field maintenance issues that lead to software errors. Assists IT staff to monitor and troubleshoot network issues, as they are related to the ITS system.
- Represent ITS maintenance needs in selection and scoping of future ITS construction projects. This task includes reviewing construction plans, including reviewing the scope and location of upcoming ITS construction projects to recommend the addition of ITS components and recommend ITS system replacement needs, based review of existing maintenance issues.
- Periodic field inspection of preventive maintenance and on-call maintenance work orders and construction inspection to confirm ITS standards and specifications are being met.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Five years of experience in engineering technical support.
- Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency. Transcripts are required for education to be considered.
- Must be proficient in computer equipment and programs such as Bluebeam, Outlook, Access, Excel and Word.
- Must be familiar with Micro Station
- Valid Driver’s License at time of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with ITS equipment such as speed detectors, or signs or traffic signal equipment. Experience providing MUTCD or other field training and using Excel to manage a database.
Post-Offer/Pre-employment Requirements:
- This position is subject to pre-employment physical capacity testing. The selected candidate will be required to pass the screening as a condition of employment.
