Job Description

SUMMARY: Serve as the primary health consultant and provide direct care necessary to support student health needs in the school setting. Act as a resource to interrelate health and education components to promote and improve school attendance and performance of students. Identify health needs of students through observation, appraisal of health histories and screening programs; and conferences with parents, medical provider(s), and school staff. Provide support to students and staff at Woodrow Wilson Academy and programs, Home School Connections, Wild Cat Care and Preschool. Nursing support is provided according to district guidelines, policies, and protocols. Nursing services also must align with Colorado state guidelines (CDE and CDPHE) and The Board of Nursing requirements, as well as the application of nursing theory and ethics which is utilized as a basis for decision making to support the diverse needs of student populations within the school setting.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

Provide ongoing training and monitoring of school health room functions and delegated tasks.

Provide training, delegation, and monitoring of medication administration to identify staff, and student health procedures that are necessary to support student health needs in the school setting according to district policies, state law, and Board of Nursing requirements for all programs, WWA, PK, WCC, and HSC (3 locations). Remain available, on call, before and after hours, 6am-6pm.

Provide direct care to support student health needs as necessary as identified through district nursing and departmental guidelines.

Collaborate with parents and outside medical providers to develop, implement, and review individualized Student Health Plans appropriate to the school setting for those students identified with safety concerns and/or significant health conditions including acute, chronic, or life-threatening conditions for all programs, WWA, PK, WCC and HSC

Consult and participate in educational planning and health education with school staff to promote and improve student school attendance and performance.

Complete student health assessments as needed for Section 504 and Special Education according to district guidelines and Nursing practices.

Collaborate with the Special Education team and 504 team.

Vision and hearing screenings and follow up with referrals and Calibration of Audiometers.

Meal Modification Forms of Free for all Lunch Program- Work with Lunchroom Manager to ensure forms are completed and submitted to DPS for students who need them. Wellness Vaccines compliance, communicated with parents as needed for vaccines. Serve as a health liaison and maintain ongoing communication with parents and students, administrators, Health Aides, school staff, medical providers, and community agencies to support student attendance and academic performance. On call for the Washington DC trip, 24 hours, and attend the Outdoor Lab school for HSC and coordinate care for WWA with Mt. Blue Sky. Consult on communicable disease prevention and control and public health issues as they arise according to district guidelines, local and state public health agency guidelines, and laws. Participate in collaborative teams with Jeffco Public Health Department, and any other county team, to promote individual and nursing team growth, which will benefit student health and wellness. Assume responsibility for attending required staff professional development, and attending continuing education opportunities that contribute to best practices. This includes all professional competencies, which contributes to the professional growth of employees and colleagues. Participate as qualified Heart saved (BLS) Provider CPR/AED/First Aid/Stop the Bleed Instructor to support school CPR/AED/First Aid/Stop the Bleed staff training. Registered Nurse Participated as a qualified Colorado Shines Instructor to train all school staff regarding medication administration and supporting school staff with all medication needs for students. Serve as a resource for students and families for mental health services which include internal services and external services. Other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: Registered Nurse, Bachelor of Science/BSRN educational training. Valid Colorado state license to practice as a Registered Nurse. Colorado Department of Education School Nurse K-12 (preschool-21 years) and Department of Regulatory Agency (DORA) certification prior to hire. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Prefer experience or education in the following areas: school nursing; pediatric and adolescent nursing including clinical experience in acute, chronic illness, development disabilities, mental health, substance abuse support; and Nurse/Masters prepared within nursing or health domain or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, community or public health nursing, or nationally board certified school nurse. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to walk and stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. WORK

ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The majority of time is spent on the school site including special program sites such as Outdoor Lab. MENTAL FUNCTIONS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate, use interpersonal skills, coordinate, instruct, interprets and assess student health information, and use strong decision making and analytical, critical thinking skills
