Correctional Sergeant - Farm - Agriculture Herd Mgt.

Job Description

This position is responsible for the security, custody, control and rehabilitation of persons in our care at the Waupun State Farm, assuming total responsibility for post operations. The Correctional Sergeant (Sgt.) provides direct supervision of minimum security persons in our care who are working on this BCE team, and orients and directs persons in our care to perform a variety of farm work assignments.

This position coordinates, develops, maintains and provides security for the persons in our care activities to include work assignments at the farm locations. This position assures strict compliance with the rules and standards of persons in our care working on this BCE team. The Sgt. helps persons in our care demonstrate, improve, and extend to a workplace what they’ve learned while participating in previous treatment, education, and work assignments. The Sgt. performs other duties and works other shifts as needed and/or directed.

Salary Information

This position is in pay schedule and range 05-32 with a starting base pay rate of $36.35/hr. Pay will be set in accordance with the Compensation Plan and Wisconsin Administrative Code in effect at the time of hire. A probationary period is required.

Job Details:

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States (i.e. a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, or an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without DOC sponsorship) at the time of application.

The Department of Corrections may conduct pre-employment drug screens. Any applicant who is offered employment in a position which requires a pre-employment drug screen must pass the screen as a contingency of employment.

The Department of Corrections will conduct criminal background checks on applicants prior to selection. Upon hire, all new DOC employees are subject to fingerprinting.

Shift for position one: 10 days on (Tues-Thurs); 4 days off (Fri-Mon) Weekdays 8AM-4PM; Weekends 4AM-Noon

Shift for position two: 10 days on (Tues-Thurs); 4 days off (Fri-Mon) Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays 8AM-4PM; Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays 4PM-Midnight

This position requires completion of a medica, drug, and fitness screening.

Qualifications

Minimally qualified applicants will have experience:

  • Preparing soil for the planting and cultivation of field crops
  • Planting and applying fertilizer, herbicide & pesticide to field crops
  • Harvesting and storing field crops
  • Using and maintaining farm equipment and machinery
  • Recognizing and treating livestock health problems
  • Feeding livestock, including adjusting feed rations as needed
  • Preparing and setting up milking equipment
  • Using correct milking procedures
  • Washing and sterilizing milking equipment
  • Instructing or training others in farm operations
  • Using basic first aid techniques
  • Maintaining safety at work
  • Meet DOC firearms standards

Special Requirement:

  • Must be able to obtain a Class A CDL driver’s license.
