The Hawaii National Guard Youth Challenge Academy (HINGYCA) is part of a nationwide strategy to help at-promise youths, ages 15 ½ -18, reclaim their lives. The Academy is a voluntary drug-free program where military-style discipline provides a strong platform for self-control, responsibility, respect, and resourcefulness. The Academy's academic curriculum is based on the Department of Education High School Equivalency Test (HiSET) and the General Education Development (GED), which is supplemented with comprehensive work and life-skills training.
Under the direct supervision of the Commandant, this position manages and provides direct oversight of the personal development and non-academic skills training of up to 150 cadets (AT-PROMISE YOUTH) in a residential, quasi-military regiment, facility.
Daily and Shift supervision of this position is in the form of the Commandant’s Designee: Assistant Commandant and Shift Leader.
Responsible for general health, safety, welfare, developing and coordinating cadet (CDT) training, and maintaining cadet records.
This position is responsible for developing, implementing, evaluating, and monitoring cadet development programs such as military drills and ceremonies, leadership/followership curriculum, recreational activities, physical fitness, and off-site work projects.
Responsible for evaluating and assisting with cadet training in areas of errors in thinking, behavior modification, social skills, anger management, sexual responsibility, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and independent living skills.
Evaluation and monitor off-site work projects, community service programs, facility maintenance and other activities related to the non-academic portion of training.
A flex work schedule that includes day, evening, weekend, nights, and holiday hours may also be worked.
The Hawaii National Guard Youth CHalleNGe Academy, at any allotted time, without notice, reserves the right to adjust, modify and or make changes to the duties and responsibilities of this position to ensure Mission success.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS OF THE WORK:
A. Must have experience supervising personnel.
B. Experience safeguarding, person(s), the community and/or businesses.
C. Have worked in a team/collaborative environment.
D. Have demonstrated ability to work in a stressful environment.
E. Graduation from High School or GED equivalent.
F. Experience with Computer, Microsoft office suite, facsimile machine, and copier.
G. One (1) year of progressively responsible work experience that demonstrated the ability to follow instructions, learn and apply work procedures, work effectively with other people, and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
H. Work experience in an institution which involved maintaining security and effective relationships with residents.
I. Must pass a background check and may be subjected to random drug screening.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
A. National Guard, Reserve and Retired Military members.
B. Military squad leader and military instructor experience.
C. Experience working with at-promise youth.
D. Knowledge of the function of the YCA program and objectives; military organization, policies, procedures, and regulations.
E. Must have the ability to instruct/communicate orally to a group of people.
F. Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with others; keep records and prepare reports; communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing; direct and supervise at-promise youth.
G. Current CPR/First Aid certification card.
H. Graduation from an accredited university with a degree in counseling, criminal justice, Psychology, sociology, or a related behavioral science or from an accredited community college with a degree in criminal justice fulfills all requirements for the Youth Challenge Cadre.
I. Completion of relevant course work in the discipline or field above from an accredited community college or university may be substituted for other requirements listed above.
REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, ETC.
Possess a valid license to drive in the State of Hawaii, and an appropriate military driver’s license, if applicable.
