Position Summary & Responsibilities:

Position Summary:

This Pavement Design Leader position is located in Topeka, at the Eisenhower State Office Building, and is within the Bureau of Road Design. This position develops improvements and updates to the KDOT Pavement Design Manual and other guide documents, supervises the Pavement Design Section, and may manage limited consultant design projects. They may also develop or oversee the development of plans for highway improvements.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Pavement Design: This work consists of administering KDOT policies and procedures regarding KDOT designed pavements. Assigns priority and coordinates utilization of engineering staff to conduct field pavement investigations and develop pavement recommendations, perform life cycle cost analysis, coordinate with District staff, and work with the surfacing selection committee to determine final surfacing design. Provides pavement technical assistance to the surfacing selection committee, KTA, and local governments.
  • Administration: This work consists of administering KDOT policies and procedures in their application to assigned projects or the review and/or coordination of proposals by other agencies, consulting firms, or units of government. This includes the supervision/coordination of environmental actions regarding these projects, as well as being project manager for the location and design of assigned projects contracted to consulting engineering firms.
  • Pavement Manual Composition: This work includes extensive pavement engineering knowledge and experience for researching source documents, for the writing, assembly, and coordination of the KDOT Pavement Design Manual.
  • Consultation: Acts as a design consultant and assists staff in solving pavement design problems. Provides road design expertise for highway projects on a limited basis.
  • Reviews: Reviews for pavement design decisions made in the development of plans. This includes existing pavement evaluations and pavement design decisions.
  • Equipment Needs: Determines manpower and equipment needs necessary for the conduct of the activities of the Section. Submits recommendations and justifications for inclusion in the Department’s budget.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Professional Engineering License recognized by the Kansas Board of Technical Professions.
  • Six years of experience in engineering.
  • Valid Driver’s License at time of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a B.S. in Civil Engineering
  • Good oral and accomplished written communication skills. Should possess a thorough knowledge of the policies, design criteria, and procedures used in developing highway plans.
  • Considerable experience in the civil engineering field
