A Brief Summary of This Position
This is an individual contributor position responsible for operating the Sub Arc Seam Welder to weld the seams of steel shafts. The Seamer is responsible for leading shafts into the welding machine with the use of a conveyor or an overhead crane and operating the seam weld positioning tuners. The associate must position the piece through the weld head(s) as the weld is deposited to make a pole. The Seamer is also responsible for adjusting carriage speeds, side roll pressures, amperage and flux flow. The associate monitors the quality of incoming steel and determines when material is substandard, as well as reports damage to the product or machinery to the Shift Supervisor or Lead Person. The person in this position also may be assigned to other work areas in production when or if the machine is not running.
Essential Functions
Responsible for feeding shafts into the welding machines for pole production
Continues the flow of the line of operation in pole shafts
Calibrates weld head for material thickness
Maintain communication between other Operators of pole production areas
Responsible for making mathematical calculation in preparing product or setting up the machinery
Ability to read and decipher welding procedures and flat sheets without assistance and use them to properly weld within parameters
Expected to weld, grind and repair each pole prior to Quality inspection
Repairing seaming defects as directed
Repeatedly produce sound welds that meet Valmont quality criteria and standards
Eventually gain experience and learn how to operate all Seamers on the property
Important Details about the Role
Demonstrate a commitment to safety through excellent safety practices and behaviors
Submitting two (2) safety contact cards on a monthly basis
Actively participate in department LEAN activities and demonstrated performance working in a team environment
Demonstrate knowledge of Valmont's quality procedures, standards, and practices
Work and potentially perform other duties as directed by the shift supervisor
Ability to work independently the majority of the shift
Accountable for all upkeep and maintenance on essential tools and welding equipment (i.e. changing consumables, flux, dumping the hopper, etc.)
Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)
At least one (1) years of minimum welding experience
Must be able to pass an AWS welder operator qualification test for GMAW process
Read welding procedures and use a tape measure
Must be able to safely lift up to 50 pounds maximum, although most frequent lift is up to 20 pounds
Stand and walk for 90% of the shift
Ability to read and write
Perform math functions such as add, subtract whole numbers, fractions and decimals
Use appropriate tools and equipment to inspect and maintain quality of the poles GMAW welder, stick and hand grinders, along with various hand tools to assist in the welding of shafts
Setup, operate, and perform general maintenance of equipment without difficulty
Able to work timely and expeditiously to deliver an on-time product without manufacturing error
Clean work area daily
Ability to communicate and interact with coworkers and supervisor
Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications
High School diploma or GED
1 - 2 years of experience
Prior experience working in a manufacturing setting
Familiar with hydraulic systems

Ability to become AWS certified in MIG or Flux Core
Read, write and follow non-complex instructions
Job Training Skill Development
Basic programming and setup of Seamer machinery, trouble shooting operating malfunctions, and be well versed in operator's maintenance of the equipment.
Read welding procedures and flat sheets, and routings in order to weld parts correctly.
Shop mathematics including conversion of decimals to fractions.
Knowledge of the properties of steel in order to close and weld shafts without quality issues.
SAW and GMAW welding processes.
Visual weld quality, penetration, and appearance for processed shafts.
Knowledge of Valmont's quality procedures, standards, and practices.
Decision Making
The associate must inspect each shaft to be welded to ensure that the SAW process will be able to weld without any major issues. Issues can include twist, excessive gap, seam edge quality, and poor form from the brake press.
Ability to make mathematical calculations in preparing to run equipment or programming equipment.
Ability to set up machines to the proper requirements so that usable parts are produced.
Ability to be flexible in running as the operator or helper in order to keep the line running efficiently.
Determine which weld procedure to use in order to assure weld soundness and integrity.
When downtime occurs the associate would need to diagnose problem the issue and use own judgement to request maintenance to assist in issues beyond their expertise.

Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, which include hand tools, machine components, grinding equipment, etc.
Must be able to stand, walk, climb stairs, walk on elevated equipment platforms, crouch, kneel, and bend over in the duties of the position.
