Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary:

Incumbents in this class are responsible for full supervision of one or more working units. Incumbents maybe responsible for a shift at a major corrections institution or all security operation at a small institution or facility. Incumbents in this class are certified Corrections Officers and exercise delegated statutory powers.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Direct security activities and maintaining control and order of an assigned shift; ensure all critical posts are properly manned and maintained.
  • Ensure proper inmate counts and count reports
  • Assist in resolving security problems which may arise
  • Oversee shakedowns of the facility and grounds for contraband
  • Work closely with Classification Administrator, the Unit Team Managers, and Unit Team Staff to assure security activities by both staff and inmates in the living units are in compliance
  • Make periodic inspections to the facility to uncover circumstances or conditions that might result in impeding security, including assuring proper care and treatment of inmates
  • Conduct emergency drills as required
  • Ensure continuous implementation of the facility housekeeping plan
  • Properly identify and respond to inmate medical and health related needs
  • Evaluate and develop staff


Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma/GED or Equivalent

Licensing & Certification: Valid Kansas Driver's License

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must meet all minimum qualifications and necessary special requirements for a COI A
  • Be at least 21 years of age at time of appointment
  • Have four years of relevant experience in the field of corrections or in the detention of convicted offenders including at least one year supervisory experience in Corrections
  • Have successfully completed the Corrections Officer Training Program (COTP).
    • At the discretion of the agency, relevant college coursework or completion of corrections officer training in another jurisdiction may be substituted for some or all of the required COTP and for some or all of the required non-supervisor experience.
    • Agency approved substitution: NONE

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Capacity to remain alert over long periods of time; capacity to remain calm during stressful situations; capacity to physically restrain residents; good physical condition, including the capacity to respond to emergencies quickly, to climb stairs, and to use physical force to subdue violent and resisting residents.
