Starting salary for this position:
$39,852.80 ($19.16/Hourly)*

  • Offered salary will be determined by experience, qualifications, and skill set that the candidate brings to the position. Though this position is unclassified, the posted starting salary is equivalent to classified Pay Grade 25, step 6. Please contact Recruitment Coordinator for further details.

Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary:

The Reentry Specialist is responsible for coordinating, monitoring, and supporting comprehensive release planning for residents within 16 months of their projected release date. This position ensures timely identification of barriers to successful reentry, facilitates multidisciplinary Pre-Release Exit Planning (PREP) meetings, oversees peer led programming and ensures compliance with Kansas House Bill 2653 regarding vital documents and identification requirements. The Reentry Specialist works collaboratively with facility staff, parole services, community providers, and residents to promote continuity of care and successful reintegration into the community.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

Reviews files for all residents expected to release within 9 months to ensure compliance with HB 2653 requirements. Identifies residents lacking required documents, including: Certified birth certificate, Social Security card, Driver’s license (pursuant to K.S.A. 8-243), if eligible; State identification card (K.S.A. 8-1324), if eligible; Vocational training records (if applicable); Work records (if applicable); Educational certificates or diplomas (if applicable); Resume including trade skills learned while incarcerated. Reviews the missing birth certificate and Social Security card report distributed by the Statewide Identification, Registration, and Detainer Specialist. Collaborates with unit team case managers and residents to complete and submit applications for vital documents. Works with designated facility staff to collect applications and automatic withdrawal requests for State ID/Driver’s License clinics. Coordinates notifications, callouts, and logistics for on-site mobile identification clinics. Ensures electronic and master (hard copy) files are accurate, complete, and consistent.

Updates, maintains, and reviews the tracking system for release plans of residents within 16 months of release. Identifies cases with reentry barriers including homelessness, acute medical or mental health needs, domestic violence concerns, or other risk factors. Notifies the Facility Release Planner (IPO), Reentry Coordinator/Release Manager, and the Case Management and Reentry Administrator of identified barriers requiring intervention.

Schedules and facilitates Pre-Release Exit Planning (PREP) meetings in conjunction with Facility Release Planner (IPO) or designated staff on site. Ensures that the assigned parole officer and unit team case manager are in attendance along with other applicable service providers such as career navigator, education navigator, substance use treatment provider, housing specialist, behavioral health service provider etc Ensures that PREP meetings are documented as a chrono note and in Referral, Acceptance, Participation and Summary (RAPS) in Athena. Monitors follow-up actions resulting from PREP meetings.

Provides oversight of peer-led programming, ensuring alignment with evidence based practices. Builds, maintains, and vets program rosters for distribution to stakeholders. Coordinates resident peer participation in facilitation training and evidence based programming. Conducts in-person classroom monitoring of peer led groups to ensure program fidelity and appropriate documentation. Supports peer facilitators in meeting program expectations and maintaining professional standards.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

One year experience in planning, implementing and monitoring activities relevant to the agency’s programs. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.

Agency Approved Substitutions: Completion of 60 semester hours of coursework from an accredited college or university, including 12 hours in corrections, criminal justice, the social sciences, or the behavioral sciences, and three years of experience in the field of adult corrections; or, completion of a four-year degree in corrections, criminal justice, the social sciences, or the behavioral sciences, and one year of experience in the field of corrections.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working with incarcerated populations.

Experience working on multi-disciplinary teams.

Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in criminal justice, the social sciences, or the behavioral sciences, and one year of experience working with offenders in corrections, parole, or law enforcement. Additional experience may be substituted for the required education as determined relevant by the agency.

Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements: Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Must pass a criminal history records check.
