The Tiverton/Little Compton Prevention Coalition is hiring a Community Educator/Coalition Leader to be in charge of coordinating efforts for our Drug Free Community Grant.

The Tiverton/Little Compton Prevention Coalition is dedicated to promoting a culture of wellness and enhanced community health through advocacy, education, leadership and proactive strategic practices. By working closely with schools, community members, and local law enforcement the TLCPC continues to provide effective services to all residents of Tiverton and Little Compton.

The Community Educator is responsible for implementing programs for the youth in our community, collaborating with content developers and building communication and learning strategies to best meet established goals and grant requirements.

Context

The Tiverton/Little Compton Prevention Coalition has received a 5-year federal grant to address the substance use prevention needs of youth in Tiverton and Little Compton.

The Drug Free Community Grant for Tiverton and Little Compton seeks to accomplish two goals:

  • Strengthen collaboration among community stakeholders and organizations to address youth substance use
  • Reduce youth (ages 12-18) marijuana and nicotine use

The Community Educator/DFC Coordinator seeks to build a team of individuals and organizations committed to develop, implement, and monitor effective community-based prevention programs and enhance the community’s ability to address substance use issues among youth.

Hours: The Community Educator - Drug Free Community Coordinator will work 40 hours per week.

Supervision: The coordinator will work collaboratively with the community prevention specialists throughout Newport County and will be supervised by NCPC Director of Prevention. Additionally, a team of dedicated professionals exists to provide guidance, direction and technical assistance.

Compensation:Starting salary $52,000-$56,160 negotiable depending on certification and experience; health/dental benefits, paid vacation and holidays, telephone stipend. 401K and mileage reimbursement.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Excellent communication skills, group facilitation; and ability to work with small groups as a leader and presenter; community organizing experience preferred;
  • Demonstrate reliable attendance; willingness to work occasional evenings and weekend events;
  • Education in human services (broadly defined); Public health experience is a plus;
  • Exceptional interpersonal and organizational skills;
  • Must have ability to travel throughout Newport County providing own transportation;
  • Working knowledge of and experience implementing prevention strategies; experience building partnerships, collaboration, and public awareness activities;
  • Ability to lift and carry supplies and/or equipment weighing up to 30 pounds;
  • Proficient computer skills, including social media required; and
  • Must pass BCI check as a condition of employment

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinate prevention efforts between the coalition and community sectors, including: town government, police, schools, mental health organizations, health care providers, media, business community, religious organizations and other relevant organizations;
  • Lead school-based prevention activities and community-based youth activities outside of school time;
  • Inform community about DFC Grant efforts; secure partnerships, serve on relevant committees within community and recruit volunteers;
  • Collect data to assess community prevention needs; document and report on findings;
  • Develop annual DFC program plans and oversee implementation of the DFC grant’s goals and objectives;
  • Engage and support local parents in prevention objectives;
  • Ensure timely completion of program deliverables as outlined in annual plan; and
  • Achieve Prevention Specialist certification in a timely manner (All training is paid).

Relationship to Newport County Prevention Coalition (NCPC): NCPC is the regional prevention coalition that supports the community coalitions in LC, Tiverton, Portsmouth, Middletown, and Newport.

  • Attend NCPC monthly coalition meetings and trainings; weekly NCPC team meetings;
  • Support NCPC prevention efforts as contributing team member
