Assistant Public Defender - Juvenile Unit
This Assistant Public Defender position is an attorney position within the Juvenile Unit of the office. The person must be an attorney licensed in Pennsylvania and be familiar with Pennsylvania Juvenile delinquency law and procedure as well as criminal law and procedure. The person must be able to represent clients who range from the ages of 10-21 years old in all proceedings from intake through trial in the delinquency system.

- Must be able to interview clients and witnesses at the Office, York County Youth Development Center, York County Prison, and any other location where the client may be detained.
- Must be able to represent juvenile clients, ranging from 10-21 years old, in all hearings from the initial intake appointment through trial and post-sentence motions; must be able to write and present motions in the Court of Common Pleas, and conduct hearings and trials.
- Must be able to represent clients in all levels of delinquency practice including: ACT 21, Tender Years Hearings, Certification, Decertification and cases of shared responsibility with the York Co Dependency system.
- Must comply with annual CLE requirements and maintain a membership with JDAP which are compensated for by the Office
- Must comply with all other reasonable duties as assigned by the supervisor
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must have a law degree and be licensed to practice law in PA and be in good standing
- Must be familiar with PA juvenile delinquency law and procedures as well as PA criminal law and procedures, as well as the Rules of Evidence, and other statutes relevant to representation of defendants in juvenile delinquency cases.
- Must be well-versed in performing legal research
- Must have good writing skills
- Must have excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate with clients under the age of 21 as well as their parent/guardians.
- Must be able to work in both a team and individual environment. This team environment could involve other professionals from outside of this office with the expectation that the attorney conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times.
