Position Summary:
As a Staff Interpreter, you will provide sign language interpreting services in various settings and work collaboratively with the community and the interpreting team. You will also assist with mentoring interns, perform administrative tasks, and represent SLS with professionalism.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interpret between American Sign Language (ASL) and English for diverse assignments (e.g., K–12 education, medical, post-secondary, mental health, and more).
  • Review materials and prepare for interpreting assignments.
  • Provide mentorship to interpreter interns as assigned.
  • Perform administrative tasks as required during non-interpreting hours.
  • Adhere to the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct, SLS policies, and department guidelines.
  • Travel as required to meet the needs of the position.

Educational Requirements:

  • College degree preferred.
  • Completion of an interpreter training program or acceptable equivalent.
  • Minimum of 80 hours of professional development every 4 years.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • National Certification (preferred) or experience equivalent.
  • Valid Tennessee driver’s license, private and reliable transportation, and current automobile insurance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficient in interpreting and transliterating between ASL and English.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to handle a variety of interpreting settings with competency.
  • Strong mentorship and collaborative skills.
  • Familiarity with the ethical standards set by RID.
  • Administrative and record-keeping abilities.
