Summary
The Veterinary Technician Assistant is a key member of the medical support team, working directly under the supervision of veterinarians and veterinary technicians. This enhanced role extends beyond basic support to include patient history intake, blood collection, and initial laboratory sample preparation. They free up technicians to assist the veterinarian with advanced medical and surgical procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide compassionate and high-quality care to patients and clients.
- Medical Histories: Actively listen and communicate with clients to obtain detailed patient medical histories.
- Phlebotomy: Proficiently perform phlebotomy and collect blood samples from feline and canine patients using appropriate techniques.
- Laboratory Support: Assist with in-house laboratory testing (e.g., SNAP tests, urinalysis, microscopy prep) and basic cytological slide preparation.
- Sample Collection: Collect and prepare laboratory samples including fecal, urine, and cytology.
- Restraint: Perform safe animal handling and restraint during examinations and procedures.
- Diagnostics: Set up diagnostic tests and maintain laboratory equipment.
- Clinical Support: Assist with imaging (holding/processing digital radiographs).
- Surgical Prep: Prepare and process surgical packs and equipment.
- Pharmacy/Treatments: Administer approved treatments and vaccines under supervision.
- Maintenance: Maintain a clean, sterile environment and ensure accurate, timely medical record keeping.
Position Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent (Required).
- One (1) year of prior veterinary assistant experience, including phlebotomy and lab work, is highly preferred. Further training is provided.
- Completion of a veterinary assistant certification program is a plus.
- Ability to commute to or relocate to Broomfield, CO 80020 before starting work.
Physical Effort & Working Conditions
- Physical: Work requires lifting and carrying animals, records, and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs; requires sitting and standing for extended periods of time.
- Environment: May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises, animal feces, urine, and bodily fluids. May be exposed to bites, scratches, zoonotic diseases, and radiant energy (during imaging).
