Sterile Processing Technician (Central Services / SPD)
Hyannis, MA 02601
Duration: 13 Weeks
Shift: 3:00 PM – 11:00 PM
Responsible for performing all functions related to sterile processing, including decontamination, instrument preparation, sterilization, storage, distribution, inventory control, and equipment operation. Ensures all surgical instruments and clinical equipment are properly cleaned, assembled, sterilized, documented, and delivered in a timely and accurate manner while maintaining strict infection control standards.
Decontamination
- Clean, sort, disassemble, rinse, and disinfect surgical instruments and clinical equipment
- Follow proper decontamination procedures and PPE guidelines
Instrument Preparation
- Assemble instruments using count sheets
- Inspect for cleanliness, damage, and functionality
- Properly package, wrap, containerize, peel-pack, and label instruments
Sterilization
- Operate sterilization equipment (steam, ETO, Sterrad, Steris I, washers, ultrasonic cleaners, cart washers, heat sealers)
- Select appropriate sterilization methods and follow protocols
- Document and verify sterilization loads and biological testing results
Storage & Distribution
- Store and handle sterile supplies and equipment appropriately
- Retrieve and distribute instruments using preference cards and priority requirements
- Track and ensure timely delivery of supplies and equipment
Inventory Control
- Assist with ordering, stocking, receiving, and monitoring supply usage
- Communicate shortages or issues promptly
General Duties
- Maintain clean and organized work environment
- Provide support to clinical teams as needed
- Participate in training, meetings, and continuing education
- May be required to take call and work independently
- Deliver consistent service excellence to patients and staff
Sterile Processing Aide Requirements
- High school diploma or GED
- Ability to read, write, and communicate in English
- Basic computer skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Completion of Medical Terminology course or equivalent exam
- Must meet ONE of the following:
- Anatomy & Physiology course (high school or higher) OR exam
- SPD Technician Certification OR
- 3 years recent SPD experience (within last 5 years)
- Must pass SPD Technician certification exam
Sterile Processing Technician I (Preferred)
- Meets all SPD Aide requirements
- 1 year SPD Aide experience
- SPD Technician Certification
