Temporary Full-Time Social Media & Communications Manager

Job Description

Who We Are: The Flatbush Tenant Coalition is a member-led group of more than 100 tenant associations and hundreds of tenant leaders, building tenant power in central and south Brooklyn. We develop skilled and informed tenant leaders to challenge the oppressive systems that disenfranchise low-to-moderate income tenants. Our tenant leaders work together to obtain much-needed repairs in our member buildings, stop harassment and displacement, and strengthen tenants’ rights in NYC and across the state.

The Position: This is a temporary full-time position for a Communications & Social Media Manager to lead our public-facing communications and digital organizing efforts. In this position, you support FTC’s goal to build tenant power in central & south Brooklyn. This role is ideal for a person with strong writing, storytelling, communications, and social media skills who understands the importance of member-led tenant organizing in the housing justice movement and ensures that our messaging is timely, grounded, and connected to broader movement efforts. Duties and responsibilities include the following, and are subject to change:

  • Collaborate with the FTC team to build content strategy to ensure that our digital strategies mobilize supporters and amplify our campaigns.
  • Attend coalition meetings, events, and actions to take photos & videos for our digital content
  • Produce short-form video, graphics, and social explainers—in collaboration with FTC Team
  • Manage social media platforms, including posting, engagement, and performance tracking.
  • Manage and grow FTC’s presence across our social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Twitter (“X”), Facebook, etc.
  • Draft and edit external communications including newsletters, press releases, social media content, updates, and organizational announcements.
  • Create, edit, and proofread content for external communication on our social media accounts.
  • Upload and manage content on Flatbush Tenant Coalition’s website.
  • Create graphic and audiovisual content for our social media platforms.
  • Update announcements, news, events, and highlights in time.
  • Design materials such as flyers, brochures and social media creatives

Qualifications & Skills

  • Excellent writing and editing skills with the ability to craft compelling messages for diverse audiences.
  • Knowledge of graphic design tools such as Canva, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Youtube, and video editing software.
  • Experience in content writing and social media management
  • Video editing skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
  • Leadership capabilities and collaborative spirit
  • Strong problem-solving abilities
  • Creativity and artistic vision
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail
  • Familiarity with community organizing and social justice
  • Demonstrating & upholding a strong commitment to social justice and the Coalition’s mission, vision, and community organizing approach
  • Fluency in Spanish and/or Haitian Kreyol is preferred

Schedule & Hours

The position generally includes three evening shifts (1 to 9 p.m.) a week, at least one 9am to 5pm shift during the week, and two Saturday 10 am to 2pm shifts a month, for a standard work week of 40 hours per week. Although we do some of our work remotely, this position is in-person.

Salary: Starting at $65,000 and commensurate with experience

Classification: Non-Exempt. Please note that at present this is a temporary position which we expect to last at least 9 months. The position might be extended, including to permanent full-time depending on funding and organizational need.

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This position requires traveling via public transit within New York City; walking up and down stairs in residential buildings that do not have elevators or where elevators are out of service; bending down to place documents under apartment doors; lifting up to 25lbs in equipment; setting up equipment for community outreach, tabling, and events; using a computer and keyboard; making phone calls and sending texts; and other physical demands.
