Job Summary

Lu Engineers is seeking a part‑time, Construction Inspector to observe City of Rochester trench permits. This position performs on‑site inspections within the City right-of-way to ensure construction activities comply with City permit requirements, City standards for construction, work zone traffic control and applicable codes.

This role is ideal for candidates seeking flexible or reduced hours, including retired inspectors/engineers, supplemental employment, or seasonal availability.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform field inspections of construction work for compliance with approved City of Rochester trench permits within the City right-of-way.
• Monitor contractor activities related to work zone traffic control, excavation, saw cutting, utility installation, backfill, compaction, paving, concrete, and final restoration.
• Document daily construction activities and progress using written reports and photo documentation.
• Identify and report non‑conforming work, safety concerns, and potential permit issues.
• Coordinate with City permit administrators for compliance.
• Maintain accurate inspection records and permit log in accordance with City of Rochester standards.
• Attend bi-weekly meetings, pre-construction meetings, pre-pave meetings and final walk-thru meetings.

Minimum Qualifications

• NICET Level II or higher in Construction Inspection (or equivalent)
• High school diploma or equivalent (Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, or related field preferred)
• Prior experience on municipal or NYSDOT construction projects
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and schedules
• Proficiency with basic computer applications and electronic reporting systems
• Valid New York State driver’s license and reliable transportation

Preferred Qualifications

• NICET Level II, III or IV
• Experience with utility construction, sidewalk construction road construction
• OSHA 10‑Hour Construction Safety certification
• Strong written and verbal communication skills

Work Schedule

• Part‑time hours, typically weekdays during construction operations

Working Conditions

• Work is primarily performed outdoors on active construction sites
• Must be able to stand, walk uneven terrain, and work in varying weather conditions
