Your next career opportunity
In this Software Engineer role, you will build and enhance tools that power national pathogen genomics surveillance. You will collaborate with epidemiologists, bioinformaticians and public health agencies to deliver secure visualisation and reporting tools. You will expand skills across modern web, API and cloud technologies while contributing directly to public health.

What you will deliver:

  • Design, build andmaintainfeatures across theTrakkaplatform, from API and data layers to user interfaces.

  • Engage with diverse users to gather feedback, refineworkflowsand improve usability,accessibilityand performance across the platform.

  • Develop, test and document genomic data visualisation and reporting solutions that support surveillance, outbreakinvestigationand routine monitoring.

  • Produce clear technical documentation, deploymentproceduresand training resources to build capability among internal and external stakeholders.

  • Uphold stringent security, privacy and confidentiality requirements while following robust DevOps, versioncontroland recovery practices.

You maybe a great fitifyou:

  • Hold aBachelor Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering,ITor an equivalent technical discipline.

  • Develop front-end applications using JavaScript or TypeScript, ideally with experience in modern frameworks such as React.

  • Program confidently in at least one C-like language, such as C#, C, C++, or Java.

  • Work comfortably in Unix-like environments, using Git and GitHub for collaborative development and version control.

  • Create data visualisation or analytical tools, with interest in genomics,epidemiologyor other complex scientific domains.

  • Apply knowledge of cloud platforms, SQLdatabasesor Azure DevOps to support scalable,secureand reliable deployments.

The Department prides itself on offering world-class training in microbiology and immunology led by teaching specialists and teaching-research academics. This research-led teaching in infection and immunity provides superb training for undergraduate and graduate students alike. The Department is also home to the Victorian Public Health Laboratory for Microbiology, known as the Microbiological Diagnostic Unit (MDU), which provides advice and services in public health microbiology.Our research focuseslargely onunderstanding the immune system and on pathogens and infectious agents aiming to develop new ways to detect, control and treat infectious diseases or alternatively to manipulate the immune system to improve responses to organisms that cause infectious diseases or cancer.
