Position Announcement
The Utah Tech Marching Band - The Roar of the Red Rocks - seeks a dynamic, creative, and organized Color Guard Instructor to lead the visual ensemble for the Fall 2026 - 2027 marching season. This role is responsible for designing choreography, teaching technique, and supporting the overall artistic vision of the Director of Athletic Bands. The ideal candidate brings strong performance experience, a collaborative spirit, and the ability to motivate students of varying skill levels.
Responsibilities
- Design and teach choreography for flags, rifles, sabres, and dance that aligns with the marching band's musical and visual program.
- Lead regular rehearsals, including band camp, weekly practices, and game-day warm-ups.
- Develop technique curriculum covering fundamentals, equipment handling, body movement, and performance quality.
- Collaborate with the Director of Athletic Bands and visual staff to integrate guard work with drill and musical phrasing.
- Provide individual and group feedback to help students improve skill, confidence, and performance consistency.
- Assist with uniform coordination, equipment inventory, and maintenance.
- Support recruitment efforts, including outreach to local high schools and participation in community events.
- Maintain a positive, inclusive, and disciplined team culture that reflects Utah Tech University's values.
Qualifications
- Prior experience performing or teaching in Colorguard, winter guard, or drum corps
- Strong choreography and equipment-handling skills
- Ability to teach and motivate students in a group setting
- Excellent communication and organizational skills

Desired start date July 1, 2026 Typical Working Hours: - Band Camp (8am - 5pm) - Aug. 10 - 15, 2026
- M/W (4:30 - 6:30pm) - Regular rehearsal time through Fall Semester
- F (4:30 - 5:30pm) - Colorguard only rehearsal through Fall Semester
- Saturday game days - (between 6-8hrs, game times vary)
Position may include "Winter Guard" instruction hours during Spring semester depending on student interest and availability.
