Building & Grounds Maintenance Worker

Job Description

We’re seeking a Maintenance & Custodial Specialist to ensure our program facilities and grounds are clean, safe, and fully compliant with Child Care Center licensing rules, Head Start Program Performance Standards (HSPPS), and state/federal regulations in order to support high-quality, well-maintained environments for children, families, and staff.

What You’ll Do:

  • Perform daily custodial duties such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and restroom sanitation.
  • Manage refuse removal, restocking of supplies, and general facility upkeep.
  • Conduct light maintenance, including minor repairs, painting, lawn care, snow/ice removal, and equipment maintenance.
  • Inspect and maintain building systems (HVAC, lighting, security) and coordinate with contractors when needed.
  • Support compliance activities, including obtaining quotes, ensuring licensing and Davis-Bacon requirements, and maintaining tool/equipment inventories.
  • Obtain and maintain Playground Safety Inspector certification; conduct playground safety checks and provide technical guidance.
  • Assist staff with facility- and transportation-related compliance needs (CAPS).
  • Communicate effectively with staff, vendors, and contractors, and complete agency documentation accurately and on time.
  • Uphold agency policies, confidentiality guidelines, and professional standards.

Education and Experience:

High School diploma or GED required. One year of experience in custodial and/or maintenance work is preferred. Basic computer and technology skills required.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Employee must also possess reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license. Playground Safety Inspection Certification.

Language Skills:

Must be competent in reading, verbal and written communication skills.

Mathematical Skills:

Must be competent in basic math skills.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and possess independent judgment to complete routine tasks.
