Founded in 2018, Mi Work Matters is a Livonia, Michigan-based 501(c)(3) with a mission to create life-changing employment opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) through innovative workforce training, advocacy, and community partnerships.

About the Job:

A&K’s Good and Strong Coffee Shop, located onsite at the new Livonia Senior Wellness Center, is looking for an energetic, enthusiastic people-person, passionate about furthering the mission of Mi Work Matters. A commitment to excellent customer service, high quality menu implementation, excellent communication skills and passion/ability to mentor employees with and without disabilities is required. Responsible for preparing made-to-order food and beverages in an organized and safe way for coffee shop guests. Also responsible for greeting customers, taking orders, performing cashier duties, cleaning, and independently opening and closing the cafe. Our cafe team members and team supervisors power our cafe, creating delicious food and drinks, as well as creating an inclusive, and safe space where everyone feels welcome!

In addition to team member responsibilities, shift supervisors are also responsible for team management during their shift, including role-modeling positivity and professionalism, task delegation, mentorship, training, and support, creating a positive team work environment, and maintaining an inclusive, welcoming cafe environment. Shift supervisors are essential to supporting busy, productive work flow, supporting team members’ well-being and support needs, wowing customers, and maintaining a positive atmosphere in the cafe! This job demands an abundance of patience, kindness, and consideration for others and their unique support needs and working styles!

Schedule and Compensation:

Part-time position to start, averaging approximately 27-32 hours per week, Monday through Friday, during current hours of operation (8:00 AM – 3:30 PM). Typical shifts are approximately 7.5 hours, depending on season and business needs.

Availability and flexibility to cover occasional call-ins within weekday operating hours (8:00 AM – 3:30 PM) is strongly preferred.

Additional hours may become available over time.

Pay rate for this position is $14-17/hour. Perks include: snacks, meals, employee discounts, and making a difference every day!

Job duties and required skills also include, but are not limited to:

Staying focused and positive while working in a fast-paced, social environment

  • Ability to stand for 8+ hours a day
  • Counting/ stocking of inventory etc.

  • Willingness to regularly complete messy tasks (i.e. washing dishes and sinks, mopping floors, etc.)

  • Use safety lingo such as “behind”, “sharp”, “door”, “corner” when applicable
  • Safely navigating a small kitchen and prep space

Team supervision and management tasks:

  • Maintain professional attitude
  • Confident and comfortable opening, closing, and working independently
  • Track attendance, timeliness, and sign-in of team members

Learning and managing tasks

  • Quickly changing tasks, multitasking, and prioritizing tasks

  • Learning our menu options
  • Following various multi-step recipes to prepare made-to-order drinks and food items in a consistent, timely manner (ie, making and cutting sandwiches, combining smoothie ingredients, etc.
  • Problem solving and/or timely communication when issues arise

Completing Key Tasks

  • Using a tablet and printed order tickets to accurately enter, check, and understand customer orders
  • Counting money accurately and timely
  • Opening and closing cash register/POS; problem solving POS when issues arise.
  • Opening and closing the shop independently
  • Bending, stooping, or reaching (ie, frequent restocking of supplies and merchandise, cleaning, etc.)
  • Some repetitive motions (ie, wiping surfaces, mopping, vacuuming, assembling orders, etc)
  • Safely lifting, carrying, and/or maneuvering up to 25 lbs (taking trash and recycling to outside waste disposal area, emptying the mop bucket, moving supplies, equipment, and store fixtures, etc)

Experience and Skills:

  • High energy, confidence, and leadership skills (required)
  • Strong professional communication skills and tactful support style (required)
  • Food and beverage preparation strongly preferred
  • Customer service and support strongly preferred
  • Mentorship or supervision of employees in food service environment strongly preferred
  • Support of people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities strongly preferred
  • ServSafe Management Certification preferred, but will be provided if needed for otherwise qualified candidates, and must be completed within 90 days of hire
