NATURE PROGRAM LEAD INSTRUCTOR
Full- time, Temporary Position, Summer 2026
Rate: $22.00 per hour; non-union
The City of Chelsea is seeking a Nature Program Lead Instructor to plan, lead and supervise Chelsea Wild Wonders: a six-week, summer nature-based education program for youth ages 6-12. The program offers two, three-hour sessions. Monday through Friday, July 1-August 14. Session One is from 9am-12pm and Session Two is from 1-4pm at Voke Park, 546 Washington Avenue. This role includes developing activities, ensuring the safety of participants and fostering a positive and engaging learning environment.
Responsibilities
· Develop and implement hands on nature education programs for youth ages 6-12 focusing on ecology, wildlife, conservation and outdoor skills.
· Must be ready to work Monday-Friday from 8:30–4:30pm for six weeks from July 6 until August 14.
.Attend a mandatory 3-day onsite training from July 1-3. Option to train with Mass Audubon staff in Boston during the month of July.
· Lead groups on guided hikes, wildlife observations and environmental science activities in municipal parks. Supervise and mentor junior staff and volunteers.
· Supervise and mentor junior staff and volunteers.
· Ensure safety protocols are followed including first aid response and risk assessment for outdoor activities.
· Create an inclusive & engaging environment, accommodating diverse learning styles and abilities.
· Communicate effectively with parents, guardians and municipal staff regarding schedules policies and any incidents
· Assist with the maintenance and organization of program equipment and materials
· Track attendance, report incidents and provide program evaluations.
Qualifications
· BS/BA Environmental Science, Conservation, Education, Biology or a related field.
· One or two years of experience in outdoor education or environmental programs.
· Strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to manage groups of children.
· Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions and able to walk and hike.
· Good role model, high integrity and professionalism, and adaptable.
· Ability to connect with and engage diverse communities in a welcoming manner.
