At The Laurel School, we embrace a Reggio Emilia–inspired philosophy that honors children as capable, curious, and rich in potential. We believe learning emerges through relationships, exploration, and meaningful inquiry. Our classrooms are thoughtfully designed environments where children express themselves through many “languages,” including art, movement, storytelling, and play.

Position Overview
We are seeking a nurturing, reflective, and collaborative Pre-Kindergarten Teacher to join our early childhood team. This educator will facilitate a child-centered, inquiry-driven classroom where curriculum emerges from children’s interests and ideas. The ideal candidate values observation, documentation, and co-learning, and is committed to creating a respectful and engaging learning environment for young children.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement an emergent curriculum based on children’s interests, questions, and developmental needs
  • Foster a classroom culture rooted in respect, collaboration, and exploration
  • Observe, document, and interpret children’s learning through notes, photos, and displays
  • Create a welcoming, aesthetically thoughtful environment that encourages independence and creativity
  • Support social-emotional development and positive peer relationships
  • Collaborate with co-teachers, atelierista (art specialist), and families to deepen learning experiences
  • Facilitate project-based investigations that integrate literacy, math, science, and the arts
  • Communicate regularly with families through conferences, documentation panels, and updates
  • Participate in team meetings, professional development, and reflective practice

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field (Master’s preferred)
  • Experience working with preschool-aged children (ages 3–5)
  • Understanding of or interest in the Reggio Emilia approach and inquiry-based learning
  • Strong classroom management and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to observe and document children’s thinking and development
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills

Preferred Qualities

  • Experience in a Reggio-inspired or progressive early childhood setting
  • Knowledge of child development and play-based learning
  • Comfort with open-ended, process-oriented teaching
  • Reflective, flexible, and responsive teaching style
  • Appreciation for the role of the environment as the “third teacher”

What We Offer

  • A supportive, collaborative teaching community
  • Ongoing professional development in Reggio-inspired practices
  • Beautiful, well-resourced classroom environments
  • Competitive salary and benefits
