Marketing and Communication Manager

Job Description

Can Do Canines transforms people's lives by creating mutually beneficial partnerships with specially trained dogs. The dogs are provided to the client at no charge. The organization is supported primarily by donations from individuals, corporations, service clubs, and foundations.

Overview

Job Title: Marketing and Communication Manager

Job Summary: Responsible for creating and executing the marketing and communication strategy to advance the Can Do Canines’ mission, enhance the organization's brand, increase visibility, and engage target audiences

Classification: Exempt/Salaried

Salary: $59,000-$72,000, annually

Hours Required: Full-time, including occasional evenings and weekends

Reports to: Executive Director

Positions Supervised: Graphic Designer and Marketing Specialist, Community Outreach Coordinator

Role Summary

The Marketing and Communication Manager is a leadership role responsible for developing, implementing, and managing comprehensive strategies for marketing, communications, and public relations. This role plays a critical part in enhancing our visibility, building brand loyalty, and effectively communicating our mission and impact to diverse stakeholders. The role leads a small team to ensure consistent messaging and outreach across all channels.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy and Leadership

  • Develop and execute an integrated marketing and communication strategy that aligns with the organization's mission, strategic goals, and fundraising objectives.
  • Manage a team of Graphic Designer/Marketing Specialist and Community Outreach Coordinator, providing guidance, performance reviews, and professional development.
  • Manage the departmental budget and measure the effectiveness of marketing and communication efforts using relevant analytics and KPIs.
  • Manage marketing and communication volunteers, including writers, photographers, and others.

Marketing and Content Management

  • Oversee all digital marketing efforts, including website content, SEO, email marketing campaigns, and social media presence, ensuring all platforms are current, engaging, and aligned with brand guidelines.
  • Direct the creation of high-quality, compelling content (e.g., annual reports, newsletters, event materials, presentations, website stories, video scripts) that tells the organization's story and demonstrates its impact.
  • Manage the organization's brand identity, ensuring consistency in voice, tone, and visual standards across all materials.
  • Collaborate with the Volunteer Coordinator in volunteer recruitment efforts.

Public Relations and Media Engagement

  • Develop and implement a proactive public relations plan to increase public awareness of the organization's mission and programs both locally and nationally.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for media inquiries, cultivating relationships with journalists and media outlets to secure positive coverage.
  • Develop and distribute press releases and media advisories.
  • Lead crisis communication planning and execution as needed.
  • Serve as a spokesperson for the organization as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Community Outreach Coordinator to support public-facing events and campaigns.

Communication

  • Lead the development and distribution of all internal communications to ensure staff members are informed and aligned on key organizational updates.
  • Manage external communications, including direct mail, mass email communications, and public announcements.
  • Oversee the Graphic Designer in the production of all visual assets, ensuring they meet project deadlines and communication objectives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Business, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 4–6 years of progressive experience in marketing and communications, with at least 1–2 years in a management or supervisory role.
  • Proven experience in a nonprofit or mission-driven environment is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated expertise in media relations, digital marketing, social media strategy, and content creation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate the organization's mission compellingly to diverse audiences.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency with relevant software and tools (e.g., email marketing platforms, website content management systems, web analytics, social media management tools, project management systems, CRM).
