Job Description

Description of Position:

The Yo Puedo Leer Instructor plays a key role in planning and implementing a bilingual, bicultural HighScope preschool program for children ages 3–5. Working under the supervision of the Yo Puedo Leer Coordinator and in collaboration with the Director of Youth Programs, this individual partners closely with program staff, including the Preschool Coordinator and Assistant Instructor, to support daily classroom activities.

The Instructor contributes to the development and assessment of each child, ensuring they build the skills necessary for kindergarten readiness. This role also involves working closely with families, interns, and volunteers to create engaging, age-appropriate, and child-centered learning experiences. The Yo Puedo Leer Instructor reports directly to the Director of Youth Programs.

Responsibilities:

Classroom:

  • Assist in the creation of a classroom environment (room layout, work stations, materials, management tools, schedules, displays, activities, based on the HighScope curriculum.)
  • Maintain and update the classroom environment making sure all classroom areas are accessible and ready for use in the classroom.
  • Do an inventory of all classroom supplies and restock as necessary once a month.
  • Assist YPL instructor in updating bulletin/display boards.
  • Clean and sanitize classroom fixtures, materials, and bathroom.
  • Keep an organized classroom and storage closet.

Curriculum development:

  • Assist in the creation of age appropriate/child-center curriculum/based on HighScope philosophy activities for 3-5 years old.
  • Teach students how to properly use and maintain all work areas.
  • Work directly with the youth development team.

Students:

  • Be able to work professionally and treat children with respect.
  • Exceptional classroom management skills for 12-16 students.
  • Be available and work directly with children at all times. Students should always be under the supervision of a staff member.
  • Implement and teach students the HighScope Conflict Resolution.

Parents Involvement:

  • Communicate with parents and families professionally and on a constant basis about daily classroom activities and behavior.
  • Update parents on announcements, upcoming events, important information, etc in person, on the phone and online.
  • Help manage the classroom app everyday by adding pictures, announcements, home learning experiences, etc.
  • Assist in Organizing, managing and running parent orientations (once a month), open house events, special events, and graduation ceremonies.

Volunteers:

  • Supervise and work directly with volunteers and interns in the classroom to keep them engaged with the children and to have a great experience where they are learning and growing.

Reporting:

  • Be an expert at COR and be able to navigate the system to the best of its capabilities.
  • Continuously use the COR evaluation system to track the development of each child.
  • Create, manage, implement and assess student learning and development and report on those findings (pre and post test, anecdotal records, etc)
  • Digital recording and reporting of attendance and parent drop off and pick up.
  • Record any incident/accident/conflict with students, volunteers and parents.

Professional Development:

  • Continuously grow and improve professional development skills and through training, online courses and workshops.

Other Duties:

  • Clean and disinfect all spaces used by children.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Native and fully bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English. (Speak, read, write)
  • Early Childhood degree or CDA preferred
  • HighScope Curriculum Certification and COR preferred (will train right candidate)
  • 2-5 yr. experience working in the early childhood field preferred
  • General knowledge about the Latinx community and culture and the greater Michiana area, preferred.
  • Fully competent computer skills in MS Office, Google Suite, and database systems.
  • Competent professional writing and communication skills.
  • High quality organizational skills, problem solving ability, and planning skills.
  • Self-motivated and self-driven.
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and strong prioritizing skills.
  • Flexibility, multitasking, being a fast learner and being able to manage stressful situations.
  • Team player, reliable, responsible, punctual.
  • Present themselves professionally in attitude and dress.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities % of Time

Direct Classroom Management and Activities - 80%

Planning - 10%

Cleaning and Room Maintenance - 5%

Other Duties - 5%

  • This is a full-time position (36 hours per week) and is salary pay ($16-18 per hour) based on experience.
