Application Modernization Developer (Mainframe & Cloud)

Job Description

We are looking for a hands-on developer with strong expertise in both mainframe systems and cloud modernization. This role focuses on modernizing legacy applications, migrating workloads to cloud environments (including z-cloud), and building scalable, secure hybrid solutions using modern integration and DevOps practices.

Location: Pittsburgh, PA

Duration: 12 months

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and modernize mainframe applications (COBOL) and migrate workloads to cloud platforms

  • Support transformation initiatives using Java, APIs, microservices, and cloud-native architectures

  • Enable integration between legacy systems and modern SaaS, edge, and off-prem environments

  • Implement and support DevOps pipelines and Kubernetes-based deployments

  • Work with enterprise middleware and mainframe technologies including Db2, CICS, WebSphere, and MQ

  • Collaborate with security and infrastructure teams on secure, scalable modernization strategies

  • Troubleshoot, optimize, and support hybrid mainframe/cloud applications

Required Skills:

  • Strong understanding of mainframe systems and modernization principles

  • Hands-on development experience with COBOL and Java

  • Experience with APIs, JSON, microservices, and distributed architectures

  • Knowledge of cloud and hybrid environments, including z-cloud concepts

  • Familiarity with Kubernetes, DevOps, Db2, CICS, WebSphere, and MQ

  • Understanding of network security in hybrid architectures

Nice to Have:

  • Database migration testing across multiple platforms

  • Python scripting and automation development experience

Experience:

  • Proven experience in mainframe application development and modernization initiatives

  • Experience supporting cloud migration or hybrid enterprise transformations preferred

  • Background in enterprise integration or large-scale system modernization strongly preferred

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field preferred

  • Equivalent relevant experience accepted
