Water and Wastewater Instrument Tech Apprenticeship

In this 4.5 year apprenticeship program, we will teach you to become a skilled Water and Wastewater Instrument Tech Apprentice through a combination of both classroom and on-the-job training. You will be assisting with all facets of the Instrumentation and Control Specialist Sr position and learn the core job functions while eventually becoming a Journeymen in your craft.

Starting pay as a Water and Wastewater Instrument Tech Apprentice is $33.77/hr. As an apprentice, you will receive a pay increase each step you advance in the apprenticeship program; the current turnout/journey pay rate is $56.29/hr.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Learns and helps to Install, calibrate, test, troubleshoot, tune, maintain and repair digital, electromechanical equipment, monitoring devices, controls, industrial networks, SCADA, instrumentation and protective relaying systems, and electrical interfaces
  • Learns to install and calibrate microprocessors based on instrumentation and control system components
  • Learns and helps to develop, maintain and upgrade various real-time process control computer systems including database management, networking, programming and configuring of Distributive Control Systems
  • Helps to troubleshoot, maintain and repair combustion / turbine instrument and control systems
  • Helps to modify and install new hardware and software components and /or systems
  • Assists with Reviews, designs, update and learn to interpret blueprints, engineering prints, and other schematic drawings
  • Helps design interfaces from new systems into existing controls
  • Learns to design and construct specialized test equipment and systems and repairs equipment to the component level
  • Assists and maintains plans and documents work tasks
  • Maintains detailed reports and other documents
  • Learns and helps using various hand and power tools, cutting, and brazing equipment
  • It is the responsibility of all employees to comply with the safety and health program in support on an incident and injury free workplace


Who You Are:
Ideal candidate have demonstrated knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position are most often acquired through the following level of academic education, formal training and range of practical experience, or an equivalent combination.

  • A High school diploma or equivalent is required to be considered for this apprenticeship
  • Electrical experience is a plus
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
  • Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Light work.
  • Positions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, workspace restrictions and intense noises.
  • 24/7 emergency callouts that require outdoor work to fix outages (i.e. Line, Gas/Water Construction): Positions in this class typically require exposure in all weather conditions.
