The Role Role: Full-time Head Coach Location: Whakatane Aquatic Centre, 28 Gwenda Ruegg Way, Whakatane Reporting to: WSC Committee via the President About our club The Whakatane Amateur Swimming Club is a community club based at the Aquatic Centre in Whakatane. Our vision is simple: • To grow successful young adults through swimming • To build resilience through sport • To support inclusivity at all levels We are: - An inclusive club catering to swimmers of all ages and levels - from junior and (all-age) fitness swimmers through to competitive and emerging performance athletes. - A place where we “swim faster and better together” - where parents, coaches, swimmers and the committee work together to achieve our vision. - A well-established Club founded in 1945 with a quiet little legacy of developing talent and producing (current and past) National and International swimming medallists. The Head Coach role: Leading the programme - Design and deliver training and competition plans for our junior, senior and performance squads. - Oversee athlete progression and goal-setting. - Provide poolside coaching to senior, performance & adult squads directly as well as junior squads (with support from assistant coaches across these groups) - Build and refine squad structures so swimmers can progress through the levels. - Provide regular and timely communications, manage swim meet calendars, and develop long-term programme/s to support club and individual swimmer goals. - Provide leadership and coaching guidance/mentoring to any Assistant Coaching staff. On-deck coaching and meets - Run structured, engaging sessions that develop strong fundamentals, skills, and race craft for all ages. - Develop race plans. - Lead the team and provide meet-day support to swimmers at local, regional and key national events - including warm-ups, race prep and post-race feedback. Communication and collaboration - Communicate clearly and regularly with swimmers, parents and the Club Committee. - Promote the Club and sport of swimming in the Eastern Bay of Plenty community Administration - Regular reporting to the Committee and Swim Club community. - Swim meet planning, promotion and communication. - Develop quarterly swim timetables and lane allocation documentation and arrangements - Regular communications with the Whakatane District Council Aquatic Centre staff regarding timetables, lane hireage, events (planned and unexpected from any party) - Organisation of Club nights – timetable and events. - Organisation of annual Swim Club Camps - Timely responses to new and existing swimmer/parent enquiries. Required Skills and Experience - You must have a passion for swimming, coaching and engaging young people in sport. - Current Swimming New Zealand Membership / Accreditation (preferable) - Current Member of New Zealand Swim Coaches and Teachers (NZSCTA) (preferable) - Certification: Swimming New Zealand Coaching and/or relevant sports/coaching qualification (preferable) - Experience coaching swimmers in a club environment across all levels (junior, age-group and senior) - Strong administrative and organisation skills. - Strong ability to connect with young people and set clear behavioural and performance expectations. - Confident, professional communicator with parents and caregivers. - Commitment to ongoing learning, including Swimming NZ coaching pathways and best practice. - Understanding of long-term athlete development and contemporary training methods.
