Corporate Technical Manager - Metallurgy

IG is seeking a high-level Metallurgical Technical Manager to serve as the primary subject matter expert across all core aluminum processes. This role reports directly to the VP of Continuous Improvement and plays a critical role in driving product quality, solving complex plant issues, and leading enterprise-level improvement initiatives.

What They Need (Core Metallurgical Expertise)

Deep expertise in aluminum metallurgy, specifically across:

Melting & alloy chemistry control

Casting (DC casting, defect prevention, structure control)

Rolling (hot/cold rolling behavior, gauge control, flatness)

Annealing (heat treatment cycles, material properties)

Finishing processes (surface quality, coatings, customer specs)

Ability to act as the internal consultant and technical authority for all metallurgical-related challenges across plants

Strong experience with defect analysis and root cause investigation (e.g., surface defects, inclusions, cracking, yield loss)

Proven ability to connect material science to real-world production performance and customer outcomes

What They'll Be Responsible For

Lead and improve metallurgical processes across multiple plants to drive:

Product quality

Yield improvement

Cost reduction

Customer satisfaction

Own and lead complex root cause investigations, partnering cross-functionally with operations, quality, and engineering

Drive data-backed process improvements using:

SPC

Design of Experiments (DOE)

FMEA

Lean / Six Sigma

Serve as the technical escalation point for customer issues, translating technical findings into clear solutions

Influence and lead cross-functional teams on large-scale improvement projects

Support and guide quality systems (ISO 9001) and ensure consistency across sites

Skills and Requirements

Degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or Chemical Engineering

5+ years working with continuous improvement methodologies (Lean, Six Sigma, etc.)

Experience working with ERP systems for data-driven decision making

Can confidently answer: "What metallurgical problem have you solved that had the biggest business impact?"

Strong ability to tie technical work ? business outcomes (profitability, efficiency, customer retention)

Experience in aluminum (preferred) or steel manufacturing environments
