DIRECTOR OF MUSIC AND ORGANIST (PART-TIME)

Position Overview:

Mystic Congregational Church United Church of Christ, located in the quaint village Mystic, is seeking a talented, creative, innovative and engaging Organist and Director of Music to provide a variety of inspiring music within worship services through organ, piano and our established choirs as well as through individual and small group vocal and instrumental offerings. Our Music Ministries is an integral aspect of the spiritual life of our Church. This is a part-time position, 20 hours per week.

Responsibilities include:

1) Work collaboratively with the Pastor to plan, select and provide music for Sunday morning worship service as well as special evening services throughout the liturgical year, including: Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Easter and Christmas. Sunday worship time is 9:30 year-round.

2) Recruit and direct members of the Adult Choir and the Bell Choir, including weekly rehearsals, currently scheduled on Thursday evenings.

3) Develop and direct a Children’s Youth Choir.

4) Work collaboratively with the Director of Children’s Ministries to plan and rehearse the annual Children’s Nativity (historically the third Sunday of Advent)

5) Encourage sharing of church members’ musical gifts during worship by seeking out and recruiting individual vocal and instrumental musicians.

6) Lead congregation in learning new hymns, including directing rounds and call and response.

7) Establish connections within the local faith community to foster our choirs’ participation in ecumenical events.

8) Be available as personal schedule allows to provide organ/piano music for funerals, memorial services and weddings.

9) Attend weekly staff meeting and monthly Music Committee meetings and work collaboratively with the Chair to set monthly meeting agenda.

10) Supervision and management of two paid singer staff positions.

Position reports to the Pastor as supervisor and works in collaboration and is accountable to the Music Committee.

Qualifications:

1) Significant experience as a church organist and choral director.

2) BA in Choral Direction and Organ Performance or equivalent (Master’s degree a plus)

3) Member of the American Guild of Organists and/or the American Choral Directors Association

4) Demonstrated experience in recruiting singers and musicians

5) Demonstrated willingness to experiment with a variety of styles and genres of music

6) Excellent communication skills and outstanding ability to engage, motivate and interact with children, youth and adults.

7) Creative and open to new ideas and approaches to improve and grow the Music Program.

This is a part-time 20 hour/week position. Salary range $38,000 - $55,000, commensurate with experience. Benefits include vacation and sick leave.
