Position Summary & Responsibilities:

Under the directions of the Staff Development Manager, this position exists to provide direct oversight, coordination, and quality control of the On-the-Job Training (OJT) program and transitional training process for newly hired Juvenile Corrections Officers. This position ensures consistent training delivery, supports field training officers and direct supervisors, and enhances staff preparedness, confidence, and retention through real-time coaching and structured development support.

Coordinates and oversees post-OJT support processes designed to assist new staff during their transition to independent duty by facilitating structured developmental opportunities, monitors staff performance and resident engagement, and providing direct support to promote confidence, teamwork, and effective decision-making. Evaluates program effectiveness and recommends improvements.

Provides support to sergeants and command staff by offering guidance on trainee performance, reinforcing training expectations, assisting with trainee scheduling and coordination of remedial training when necessary, and assisting with real-time problem-solving during operational shifts. Serves as a liaison between Staff Development and Operations to ensure consistency from the classroom instruction to operational application. Identifies and addresses training concerns and ensures accuracy and consistency in training materials, expectations, and procedures. Assists in the development and refinement of OJT processes, training tools, and the overall new officer training program to include orientation and basic training.

Perform duties consistent with the role of a Sergeant by maintaining regular presence within operational areas, attend mass movements, answer calls for an available sergeant or supervisor, and provide supervision and support during daily operations. Supports all staff by reinforcing expectations, maintaining order, providing support, and promoting a safe and secure work environment

Attends all training necessary to develop and enhance professional skill set. Attends all annual training as required by IMPP 03-104D for all uniform staff to maintain their annual officer certification.

Performs additional duties relevant to the training needs of the facility.

Respond to emergency situations in accordance with IMPP, facility practices and training. Performs other assigned duties necessary to the operations of the KJCC and the Kansas Department of Corrections.


Qualifications:

Graduation from high school or equivalent and one year of experience in care, control, and treatment of residents.

Preferred Skills and/or Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent and one year of experience in the care, control, and treatment of offenders. Experience in training and or developing staff in

a correctional facility or similar environment may be substituted for the required experience as determined relevant by the agency. Coursework in criminal justice or the behavioral sciences may be substituted for the required experience as determined relevant by the agency.

Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements:

Must be 21 years of age or older.

Must take and pass a drug screening test provided by the Office of Personnel Services.

A TB skin test and a background investigation.
