The Labeling and Regulatory Compliance Specialist creates and maintains federally compliant food product labels and supports regulatory compliance across the organization. This role focuses on nutrition facts, ingredient declarations, allergen statements, claims, and third-party certifications while ensuring alignment with federal and state regulations and internal policies. The specialist works closely with cross-functional teams, including Marketing, R&D, Legal, Supply Chain, and Quality, to manage multiple projects simultaneously and serve as a key point of contact for labeling and compliance matters. The position offers a Monday-Friday schedule of 37.5 hours per week, with remote work or an optional hybrid arrangement for local candidates.
Responsibilities
Provide subject matter expertise in food labeling and communicate cross-functionally about current and emerging labeling issues, opportunities, and their impact on products and claims.
Work collaboratively with Marketing, R&D, Legal, Supply Chain, and Quality to ensure compliance with local and regional regulations, third-party certification standards, and internal company policies.
Develop and maintain accurate and compliant food labeling information for finished products, including allergens, nutrition facts, ingredient statements, product names, and claims, in accordance with federal and state regulations (FDA, USDA), third-party certification standards (such as non-GMO project), and internal policies.
Complete and submit documentation required to support regulatory approvals and claims, including USDA and state regulatory requirements and import/export documentation, and interact with regulators and third-party agencies as needed.
Review, contribute to, and approve artwork, packaging, graphics, and label text for existing and new products to ensure accuracy, consistency, and regulatory compliance.
Stay current with food labeling regulations, technical product and processing information, industry trends, and best practices in food labeling, and apply this knowledge to day-to-day work.
Develop and support communication for consumer and customer inquiries related to labeling, ensuring clear, accurate, and compliant responses.
Collaborate with internal stakeholders to manage regulatory, food safety, litigation, brand, and third-party risks, and provide input into risk management decisions that balance regulatory risk with business and operational needs.
Effectively problem-solve and use regulatory tools and relationships to minimize the impact of sourcing and production challenges on labeling and compliance.
Lead and contribute ideas for process and system simplification and standardization within labeling and regulatory workflows.
Manage multiple labeling and regulatory projects simultaneously while maintaining high standards of accuracy and compliance.
Essential Skills
Minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in Food Science, Nutrition, or a related field.
Minimum of 3 years of related experience in food labeling, regulatory compliance, or a closely related function.
Demonstrated experience with food labeling requirements, including nutrition facts, ingredient declarations, allergen statements, product names, and claims.
Working knowledge of FDA and USDA regulations related to food labeling.
Experience preparing and managing regulatory documentation and supporting claims for federal, state, and import/export requirements.
Ability to review and approve label artwork, packaging, and graphics for regulatory compliance and accuracy.
Strong understanding of food allergens and their implications for labeling.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with cross-functional teams and external stakeholders on labeling and regulatory matters.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
Proficiency in problem-solving and using regulatory tools and relationships to address sourcing and production challenges.
Ability to interpret and apply current regulations, technical product information, and industry trends to labeling practices.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Working knowledge of regional regulatory standards and documentation requirements.
Working knowledge of food product development, commercialization, and related processes.
Working knowledge of food safety principles and their relationship to labeling and allergens.
Experience supporting or managing third-party certifications, such as non-GMO project or similar certification programs.
Background in food science, nutrition, or a related technical discipline beyond the minimum degree is beneficial.
Experience contributing to process and system simplification and standardization within regulatory or labeling functions.
Ability to craft clear, consumer-facing communications related to product labeling.
Interest in staying current with industry trends, evolving regulations, and best practices in food labeling.
Work Environment
This position follows a first-shift schedule, Monday through Friday, for a total of 37.5 hours per week, with typical start times between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. Central Time. The role can be performed fully remote, with an option for a hybrid arrangement if the candidate is local. There is some flexibility in daily start and end times, allowing for work-life balance in coordination with team needs. During the summer period (from Memorial Day to Labor Day), candidates may be eligible for adjusted summer hours, which typically involve working longer days Monday through Thursday with a half-day on Friday, depending on department requirements. The position requires the candidate to provide a laptop capable of connecting through a company-provided VPN; Mac laptops have not historically performed well with onsite systems, so a non-Mac device is strongly preferred. The work environment is highly collaborative and cross-functional, involving regular interaction with Marketing, R&D, Legal, Supply Chain, and Quality teams. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $45.00/hr.
