POSITION: Special Assistant to the Superintendent for Community Relations – Union Exempt
LOCATION: City Hall
SALARY: By Contractual Agreement up to $105,000/year

OVERVIEW:
The Assistant to the Superintendent for Community Relations is responsible for all communications, both internal and external, for the Buffalo Public Schools. The incumbent functions as the primary spokesperson for the Board of Education. The incumbent must be available to perform duties whenever needed (evenings, weekends, holidays, etc.). Supervision is received from the Superintendent of Schools or a designee and supervision is exercised over personnel assigned.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Directs, coordinates and manages internal (e.g., communication between the Superintendent and the Board of Education, disseminating announcements, policies and procedures to staff) and external (e.g., Buffalo Public School reports, internet presence, multimedia appearances and programming, speeches for the Superintendent) communications for the Buffalo Public Schools;

Develops short and long-term public relations plans;

Advises and counsels senior administration and Board on issues management;

Facilitates all community affairs, including public presentation, event coordination, and publicity;

Trains Buffalo Public School representatives and spokespeople in speaking and issues management;

Creates opportunities for positive visibility whenever possible, including the improvement of the Buffalo Public School Newsletter and calendars, brochures, websites and social media;

Serves as consultant for developing print material for offices such as the Placement Office, Early Childhood Centers, the Parent Center, Adult Education, etc.;

Facilitates all press relations, including media requests, press releases and media contacts;

Performs related duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools or a designee.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles and techniques of effective public relations and publicity;

Ability to create, prepare and revise informational material;

Ability to work cooperatively with members of the news media, parents, teachers and community groups;

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;

Ability to organize and coordinate a number of projects simultaneously;

Ability to supervise the work of others;

Good judgment; good address; resourcefulness; initiative; diplomacy; tact;

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Open Competitive

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Communications or a closely related degree in the communications field and two (2) years of full-time experience in public or community relations in a large institution or educational setting;

OR

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Communications or a closely related degree in the communications field and four (4) years of full-time experience in public or community relations in a large institution or educational setting;

OR

(C) An equivalent combination as defined within the limits of A and B.

NOTE: Verifiable part-time experience will be pro-rated to meet full-time experience requirements. Proof of education must be presented at time of appointment.
