Power Systems Engineer

Job Description

Job Title: Senior Power Systems EngineerJob Description

This Senior Power Systems Engineer role combines advanced, hands-on power systems engineering with client-facing responsibilities, technical sales, and business development. You will lead complex power system studies, guide clients on grid integration strategies, and help grow a portfolio of work in transmission, distribution, and generation interconnection. The position offers the opportunity to shape major proposals, expand core services in the U.S. market, and potentially transition into broader technical sales or marketing responsibilities over time, while remaining deeply engaged in technical delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and execute advanced power system studies, including load flow, short circuit, transient stability, and EMT-level analyses for transmission and distribution systems.

  • Perform and oversee interconnection impact assessments for distributed energy resources and utility-scale generation, ensuring compliance with IEEE 1547, NERC, and regional ISO or utility requirements.

  • Develop detailed system models using industry-standard tools such as PSS®E, PSCAD/EMTP, ETAP, or SKM, including validation of assumptions, contingencies, and study scenarios.

  • Provide technical leadership and QA/QC oversight on study deliverables by reviewing methodologies, validating results, and approving final reports issued to clients.

  • Act as a subject matter expert on grid dynamics, system disturbances, and protection interactions, including transient events, fault behavior, and system stability.

  • Interface directly with utility clients, independent system operators, and developers, leading technical discussions, presenting study results, and advising on grid integration strategies.

  • Support and lead proposal development by defining technical scope, study approach, resource plans, and cost estimates for power system study engagements.

  • Drive business development activities in the power system studies space by leveraging existing relationships and identifying new opportunities with utilities, developers, and industrial clients.

  • Manage projects end-to-end, including scope definition, schedule development, budget tracking, and coordination of internal engineering resources.

  • Mentor and develop junior engineers in advanced study areas such as transient analysis, interconnection studies, and protection coordination.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams across North America to support transmission and distribution, asset management, and grid modernization initiatives.

  • Maintain expertise in industry standards and regulatory requirements, including NERC MOD and PRC standards, IEEE and IEC standards, and regional interconnection processes.

  • Contribute to technical thought leadership by participating in industry working groups and supporting white papers or conference presentations as needed.

  • Stay current on industry codes, emerging technologies, and best practices in power engineering.

  • Participate in industry networking, professional organizations, and client-facing events to strengthen relationships and enhance business visibility.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.

  • Hands-on power system studies experience, including interconnection studies, load flow, short circuit, and dynamic or transient studies, with the ability to perform the work directly rather than only oversee it.

  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license and willingness to obtain licensure in additional states.

  • At least 5 years of business development or seller-doer experience in the power systems industry, with direct involvement in winning work as well as delivering projects.

  • Full lifecycle project management experience, including leading studies from initiation through completion, with responsibility for scope, schedule, and budget.

  • Advanced proficiency with at least one major power system analysis tool such as PSS®E, PSCAD/EMTP, ETAP, or SKM.

  • Experience performing interconnection studies for transmission and/or distribution systems involving distributed energy resources and/or utility-scale generation.

  • Knowledge of NERC reliability standards, particularly MOD and PRC, and related study compliance requirements.

  • Strong understanding of transmission and distribution system modeling, planning, and operations.

  • Ability to develop and interpret one-line diagrams and system models for study execution.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple concurrent studies, deadlines, and deliverables effectively.

  • Strong technical writing skills for producing clear, client-facing engineering reports.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer licensure in Texas or California.

  • Experience with EMT modeling and simulations using tools such as PSCAD or EMTP-RV and advanced transient analysis.

  • Familiarity with IEEE, ANSI, and IEC standards related to grid interconnection, protection, and system studies.

  • Experience performing protection coordination and arc flash studies.

  • Knowledge of utility interconnection processes, including queue studies, feasibility studies, system impact studies, and ISO or RTO processes.

  • Exposure to substation design, protection and control systems, and equipment modeling.

  • Participation in industry organizations such as IEEE or CIGRE, or contributions to technical publications and conference presentations.

  • Experience working with utilities and markets across the U.S. and/or Canada.

  • Interest in or experience with solar, renewables, grid modernization, power generation, power distribution, and power asset management.

  • Willingness to travel as needed for client engagement, business development, and project work.

  • Interest in developing skills in technical sales, marketing, and broader business strategy over time.

Work Environment

This role offers a primarily work-from-home environment when you are not traveling to client sites, providing flexibility while maintaining strong collaboration with a team of approximately five to six engineers. You will work closely with other Professional Engineers who provide technical guidance as you integrate into the role, and you will have support for business strategy and business development growth. The position involves regular use of advanced power system analysis tools such as PSS®E, PSCAD/EMTP, ETAP, and SKM, as well as standard engineering and collaboration software. The first week or two of the role will be spent in Canada for onboarding, meeting the broader team, and receiving initial training. The organization maintains a strong project pipeline, including multiple concurrent projects, which allows you to work on a variety of assignments rather than remaining on a single long-term project. The culture emphasizes continued professional development, participation in industry organizations, and collaboration across North American teams. Benefits include generous paid time off, a year-end bonus program, competitive health and investment benefits, and a company credit card for travel-related expenses.
