Confidential Consultation - 35%
Provide a safe and confidential space for visitors to discuss campus-related concerns. Maintains confidentiality, except when there is risk of serious harm.
Assist individuals in clarifying concerns, identifying priorities, and considering options for next steps
Share general information about university policies, processes, and resources without interpreting policy or providing legal advice as a neutral resource
Adhere to International Ombuds Association's Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics
Option Exploration and Coaching - 25%
Help visitors think through communication approaches, decision-making considerations, and potential consequences of available choices
Support individuals in preparing to raise issues through appropriate formal or informal channels, if they choose
Organizational Insight - 10%
Identify recurring themes, patterns, and systemic concerns based on aggregate interactions
Provide periodic, high-level observations to the Chief Academic Officer or designee that preserve anonymity and confidentiality. Tracks trends and prepares periodic reports identifying systemic issues and opportunities for improvement.
Interim Continuity and Transition - 25%
Maintain ombuds services during the interim period. Maintain collaborative working relationships with campus partners.
Provides leadership and oversight of the Ombuds Office, budget, and assigned staff
Describe ombuds standards, boundaries, and models of practice to the appointed task force, without sharing confidential information

Required Qualifications:
Advanced degree or equivalent professional experience in conflict management, organizational development, law, higher education administration, or a related field;
Demonstrated understanding of ombuds principles and ethical standards;
Proven ability to handle sensitive matters with discretion, neutrality, confidentiality and professional judgment;
Strong listening, analytical, and interpersonal skills.

Strong understanding of university policies and procedures;

Position Overview:
The Interim University Ombuds serves as an independent, neutral, informal, and confidential resource for members of the university community seeking guidance related to campus-based concerns within the Lawrence and Edwards campuses. This six-month interim assignment ensures continuity of ombuds services while an appointed task force evaluates the future structure and evolution of the Ombuds role.
The Ombuds does not serve as an investigator, decision-maker, advocate, mediator, or agent of the institution, and does not duplicate, replace, or contribute to the work of Human Resources, the Office of Civil Rights and Title IX, labor relations, or other formal compliance or grievance offices.
Role Purpose
The Interim Ombuds supports faculty, staff, and administrators by:
Listening openly and respectfully to concerns
Helping individuals clarify issues and interests
Assisting individuals in understanding available options and resources
Promoting principles of fairness, respectful communication, and ethical organizational conduct
The Ombuds operates outside formal institutional processes and does not create or maintain records for the institution.
Core Operating Principles
The Interim Ombuds functions in accordance with recognized ombuds standards of practice, including:
Independence: Operates free from undue influence in structure, judgment, and practice
Neutrality and Impartiality: Does not take sides or favor any individual or group
Confidentiality: Protects visitor identity and communications to the fullest extent practicable
Informality: Does not engage in formal complaint handling, investigations, or adjudication This is a time-limited, six-month interim appointment created to support the campus during a period of institutional review. The position does not imply continuation or conversion to a permanent role. The selected candidate cannot hold this interim appointment while serving in a capacity that supports student conduct or grievances due to potential conflict of interest.
